UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative party has accepted the resignation of Brooks Newmark, Minister for Civil Society, who was caught sending explicit photos of himself over social media networks.

Newmark, a married father of five, was the victim of a sting operation in which he was duped by a male freelance reporter into believing he was communicating with a female Tory party activist. The journalist, who sold the story to the Sunday Mirror, was investigating allegations that some MPs were using social media sites to meet women.    Continue reading “Full Monty: UK minister resigns after falling for journalist sexting sting op”

The US-led air campaign against terrorists in Syria amounts to a war against Islam, Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front group has claimed, promising retaliation against those states involved in the bombing of the ‘caliphate’ instead of targeting Assad forces.

“We are in a long war. This war will not end in months nor years,”group spokesman Abu Firas al-Suri said as cited by Reuters. “It’s not a war against Nusra Front, it’s a war against Islam.”   Continue reading “Retaliation for US-led airstrikes in Syria will follow, Al-Qaeda offshoot vows”

Russia’s investment in its military is not a sign of a looming new arms race but rather a long-overdue modernization, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with RT and the VGTRK media corporation.

“I don’t think we are on the verge of a new arms race. At least, Russia definitely won’t be part of it,” the minister said. “In our case, it’s just that the time has come for us to modernize our nuclear and conventional arsenals.”   Continue reading “Lavrov: High time to rearm, Moscow’s military upgrade long overdue”

TOKYO (AP) — Rescue workers have found 30 or more people unconscious and believed to be dead near the peak of an erupting volcano in central Japan, local government and police said Sunday.

Nagano prefecture posted on its website that about 30 people had heart and lung failure, the customary way for Japanese authorities to describe a body until police doctors can examine it. At least four of the victims were being brought down from Mount Ontake on Sunday afternoon, one day after the volcano erupted.   Continue reading “More than 30 believed dead at Japanese volcano”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The widespread mistrust of law enforcement that was exposed by the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man in Missouri exists in too many other communities and is having a corrosive effect on the nation, particularly on its children, President Barack Obama says. He blames the feeling of wariness on persistent racial disparities in the administration of justice.

Obama said these misgivings only serve to harm communities that are most in need of effective law enforcement. “It makes folks who are victimized by crime and need strong policing reluctant to go to the police because they may not trust them,” he said Saturday night in an address at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual awards dinner.   Continue reading “Obama says mistrust of police corroding America”

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — A Ferguson police officer was shot in the arm Saturday night after encountering two men at a community center who ran from him and then opened fire during a foot chase, authorities said.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at a media briefing early Sunday that the officer approached the men around 9:10 p.m. because the community center was closed. As the officer approached, the men ran away. When the officer gave chase, “one of the men turned and shot,” Belmar said.   Continue reading “Police: Ferguson officer shot; 2 suspects wanted”

Dear Abby,
A couple of women moved in across the hall from me. One is a middle-aged gym teacher and the other is a social worker in her mid-twenties. These two women go everywhere together, and I’ve never seen a man go into or leave their apartment. Do you think they could be Lebanese?

A Tulsa police officer who was suspended and punished for refusing to attend Muslim religious services at a local mosque that has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood is suing his employer for ordering him to attend over his religious objections.

Even worse, the mosque the officer was order to attend is connected to an Imam who is an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and has been recorded proudly making numerous anti-American statements over the years.

In yet another example of the self-immolation marking the end of western culture, Captain Paul Fields of the Tulsa, Oklahoma police force was suspended and later punished further for refusing to attend the mosque as well as refusing to order any of the officers under him to do so against their religious beliefs.    Continue reading “Tulsa Police Capt. Suspended for Refusing to Attended Ordered Muslims Mosque Services”

Traditionally, Republicans are supposed to be against the redistribution of wealth in the USA. But it seems times may be changing with at least three purportedly conservative leaders in Congress suddenly advocating for at least some income redistribution.

According to Fortune magazine three major congressional Republican leaders are floating plans that call for some sort of redistribution.

Republican Senators Mike Lee and Marco Rubio have recently proposed what they are calling a pro-family and pro-growth tax reform plan that would refigure tax rates from the current seven brackets to only two; 15 and 35 percent.    Continue reading “Republican Leaders Pushing Wealth Redistribution”

Most of the time, no one actually expects the S to HTF on that particular day.

Most folks don’t go through their lives expecting one specific event to occur, and then have it unfold according to a predetermined script.

Two weeks ago, I didn’t get up in the morning expecting some jerk to get mad at his girlfriend, light a tree in her yard on fire, and set off a 100,000 acre forest fire. But he did.   Continue reading “Prepping: The Only Way to be Ready for Anything is to be Ready for Anything”

A government advisory commission assembled in the wake of the tragic Sandy Hook shooting has issued a proposal for preventing similar events that is raising eyebrows:

Monitor certain homeschoolers.

The Sandy Hook Advisory Commission (SHAC), consisting of 16 educators, local and state officials, and “behavioral experts,” was created 18 months ago by Governor Dannel Malloy after 20-year-old Adam Lanza committed the Connecticut mass shooting that transfixed the nation in December 2012. Lanza, “described as being ‘dark and disturbed’ before his death … coldly murdered his own mother in their expensive home near Newtown, Connecticut. In the face of an Ebola outbreak, the government should be deploying the military at all border entry points and in airports for the purpose of establishing quarantine zones for passengers suspected of exposure to the Ebola virus. All flights, to and from Africa, should be banned from entering U.S. airspace. Instead of protecting America, this administration is sending 3,000 soldiers, untrained in dealing with Ebola outbreaks, to Africa for reasons that nobody can seemingly identify? Why? We continue to leave our southern border completely open and Ebola, in the form of a bio-terror weapon can and will be brought into the United States. Again, I ask why? The CDC owns the patent on Ebola and every strain of the virus up to 70% of the variance from the original pathogen. Continue reading “How Ebola Will Irreversibly Transform America”

In what is more proof that the NATO operation against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is merely Libya 2.0, the Obama administration is now stating that it is open to the possibility of establishing a “no-fly zone” over Syria.

The statements, made by both Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and General Martin E. Dempsey, are supposed to hinge upon an agreement with Turkey, that is itself calling for a “buffer zone,” one of the wishes of NATO since the very beginning of the Syrian crisis.   Continue reading “Libya 2.0? Update 9/26/14: Recently Apple has announced that it is providing basic encryption on mobile devices that they cannot bypass, even in response to a request from law enforcement. Google has promised to take similar steps in the near future. Predictably, law enforcement has responded with howls of alarm.

We’ve seen this movie before. Below is a slightly adapted blog post from one we posted in 2010, the last time the FBI was seriously hinting that it was going to try to mandate that all communications systems be easily wiretappable by mandating “back doors” into any encryption systems. We marshaled eight “epic failures” of regulating crypto at that time, all of which are still salient today. And in honor of the current debate, we’ve added a ninth.   Continue reading “Nine Epic Failures of Regulating Cryptography”
