July 2014 – NORTH CAROLINA – More than 22,000 Americans were without power at the start of the July 4th holiday after Hurricane Arthur scythed through North Carolina’s Outer Banks early Friday. Thousands more had already fled in preparation for the Category 2 storm, which has seen maximum sustained wind speeds of 100 miles per hour, lashings of rain and a storm surge of up to five feet. California’s drought is intensifying, turning more farms to dust, fanning fires, draining fountains and driving “unbelievable” prices at water auctions.

A map released by the US Drought Monitor on Thursday classified nearly 80% of California as in “extreme” drought, the second highest of five categories. The search giant has announced that, starting in September, it will ban advertising of firearms, ammunition, and gun paraphernalia. MINERAL, Va. (AP) – Federal officials are planning to test Virginia’s ability to respond to an emergency at Dominion’s North Anna nuclear power station.

The Federal Emergency Management says the biennial emergency preparedness exercise at the plant about 40 miles northwest of Richmond will take place the week of July 7.

Pardon my language, but what’s the friggin’ deal with all that? Why is no one calling the day by its proper name, “Independence Day”? LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A south Arkansas woman celebrated her 116th birthday Friday with cake, a party and a new title — she’s now officially the oldest confirmed living American and second-oldest person in the world, the Gerontology Research Group said.

Gertrude Weaver spent her birthday at home at Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Camden, about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock. PARIS (AP) — The mother of a pupil at a French pre-school stabbed a teacher to death in front of her class Friday, the last day of the school year, authorities said.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A veteran who collapsed in an Albuquerque Veteran Affairs hospital cafeteria — 500 yards from the emergency room — died after waiting around 20 minutes for an ambulance, officials confirmed Thursday.

It took between 15 and 20 minutes for the ambulance to be dispatched and take the man from one building to the other, which is about a five-minute walk, officials at the hospital said. MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — Justin Ross Harris was a devoted and loving father who talked about his toddler son often, his friends and family say. But prosecutors have portrayed him as a man unhappy in his marriage who exchanged nude photos with several women as his son died in a hot SUV.

Harris, 33, faces murder and child cruelty charges in the June 18 death of his 22-month-old son Cooper, who police say was left in a vehicle for about seven hours on a day when temperatures in the Atlanta area reached at least into the high 80s.
