The Russian military detected a Ukrainian SU-25 fighter jet gaining height towards the MH17 Boeing on the day of the catastrophe. Kiev must explain why the military jet was tracking the passenger airplane, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Before the founding of the Zionist movement, there were about 1,000,000 Jews throughout the Middle East, living among Arabs in relative peace for many centuries. In 1890, there were 500,000 Arabs living in Palestine, 80% of which were Muslim, 8% Jews. Yet, Zionist leaders claimed they were coming to settle “a people without land [mostly European Jews] on a land without people [Palestine].”

By 1947, Jews owned about 6% of the land in Palestine. Millions of pounds could be paid to communities that consider burying the UK’s nuclear waste in their area, the government has announced.

Payments of up to £1 million (US$1.6 million) a year could be doled out to localities that even contemplate accommodating an underground Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) to permanently store radioactive waste from nuclear power, industry, and defense. There have been reports that the Islamic State has issued a fatwa(Islamic decree) mandating female genital mutilation for all women aged 11 to 46. Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves the removal of part or all of the external genitalia of a woman.

Recent Boko Haram attacks have left 11 parents of the 220 girls abducted by the group dead. In an attack on the Kautakari village by the Islamist militants, seven fathers of the missing girls were killed. A total of 51 villagers died in the attack on the village, which is loactedclose to Chibok.

In addition to the seven fathers, four other parents of the kidnapped girls have died due to illnesses caused by the trauma of having their daughters taken. The Russian military fired artillery rounds into eastern Ukraine on Thursday, a “clear escalation” of hostilities there, Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said.

Russia has about 12,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, Warren said. Russian tanks, artillery and rocket launchers have crossed into Ukraine to support separatists there.

BEIRUT: An Air Algerie plane crashed Thursday enroute from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with more than 100 passengers onboard, an Algerian aviation official said. The plane had disappeared from radar Thursday morning, with at least 20 of its passengers Lebanese, a source at Lebanon’s consulate in Burkina Faso initially told The Daily Star, with officials later confirming the number.

NATO held an exercise code named «BREEZE 2014» that ended in Black Sea. The exercise, which included the use of electronic warfare and electronic intelligence aircraft such as the Boeing EA-18G Growler and the Boeing E3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), coincided with the shootdown of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 in eastern Ukraine, some 40 miles from the Russian border.
