Police: Armed man talking about prophecy wasn’t aware of what city he was in

Police say a man arrested with a gun talking about going to a church to fulfill a prophecy wasn’t targeting a local church, and didn’t even know what city he was in.

The man was arrested after a witness reported seeing a man carrying a gun about 7 a.m. on Sunday in the 2400 block of West Kingsbury Street, Seguin Police spokesperson Tanya Brown said.  

An off-duty SPD officer on her way home from an overnight shift found the man walking eastbound toward the city in the 2200 block of West Kingsbury Street, Brown said. The officer described him as “oddly dressed” wearing tactical-style clothing, a surgical face mask, carrying a loaded handgun and extra ammunition.

“He said that he was headed to a church — which he did not identify the church — and that he was going to fulfill a prophecy,” she said. “He did not elaborate what that (the prophecy) entailed.”

Officers identified the man as 33-year-old Tony Dwayne Albert II from the Houston area, Brown said.

“I don’t know what ties he has in Seguin or why he’s here but he is not from Seguin,” she said. “My understanding is that he thought he was in a different city.”

Albert reportedly told officers the name of the city, however they are withholding that information at this time, Brown said.

“He never identified a specific church. He did specify or identified a specific city that he thought he was in it was not Seguin,” she said. “Detectives are reaching out to them (the city) to let them know. We don’t want to jump to conclusions, and since we don’t have information about a specific location or church, we want to be cautious because we don’t want to scare people.”

Albert was arrested without incident and booked into Guadalupe County Jail on a charge of possession of marijuana and felon in possession of a firearm, Brown said.

Detectives with the Seguin Police Department are investigating the incident along with assistance of the FBI, ATF and Texas Rangers, Brown said.

“We will continue to talk to him and family members throughout our investigation,” she said.

Brown didn’t delve into Albert’s criminal history, only saying detectives learned he was a felon.

Albert was taken to the Guadalupe County Jail for possession of marijuana and felony possession of a firearm. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

“We’re extremely grateful for (the person who called it in) and I know the citizens of Seguin are, regardless of if he thought he was somewhere else,” she said. “He still could have carried out a shooting or he was capable of doing that since he had a loaded handgun. Not sure exactly what his plan was, but we are glad that somebody called in and we were able to apprehend him and secure him so that our community is safe.”

Brown said this incident serves as a reminder of “see something, say something.”

“I think it’s important that we acknowledge when citizens do call us and let us know,” she said. “We’d rather go out and it be nothing than something that we can’t check because somebody didn’t want to bother us … such as this, they could have turned into something that was devastating to our community.”
