Rescue crews search for survivors after massive Washington mudslide

Rescue crews are searching for survivors after a massive landslide of dirt, trees and rocks in rural Washington killed three people, injured at least eight others and destroyed six houses.

Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots told reporters late Saturday that crews could hear voices from the debris field pleading for help. It was not immediately clear how many people might still be alive.

“We have people who are yelling for our help, and we are going to take extreme risks,” Hots said. “This is still a rescue mission until we determine otherwise.”

Shari Ireton, a spokesperson for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s office, said rescuers were using thermal imaging cameras to help try to find people.

The slide — at least 135 feet wide and 180 feet deep — hit just before 11 a.m. Saturday and completely blocked State Route 530 near the town of Oso, about 55 miles north of Seattle. Also blocked was the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River, and there were concerns about possible downstream flooding affecting more homes.

Residents both upstream and downstream from the slide were being asked to prepare to leave at a moment’s notice, Snohomish County spokeswoman Bronlea Mishler said.

“We are not issuing an evacuation order,” she said. “However, we need residents living along the river to be prepared. Conditions are changing very rapidly.”

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department initially reported that two people had been killed. Authorities said later that one of the people who was rescued died at a hospital.

The injured included a 6-month-old infant, Ireton said. People were transported to a nearby hospital, as well as medical facilities to the north in Skagit County and to the south in Seattle.

Five of the injured were brought to Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington, but one has already been treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Egger.

The facility was expecting more injured people, but Egger said she didn’t know how many and couldn’t comment on the condition of those already at the hospital because they were still being evaluated.

“We’re on standby waiting to see what happens next,” Egger said.

The American Red Cross has set up at the hospital and is seeking donations of food, water, blankets and clothing, Egger said. An evacuation shelter has been set up at Post Middle School in Arlington.

One eyewitness told the Daily Herald that he was driving on the roadway and had to quickly brake to avoid the mudslide.

“I just saw the darkness coming across the road. Everything was gone in three seconds,” Paulo Falcao told the newspaper.

Search-and-rescue help came from around the region, plus the Washington State Patrol, and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Authorities believe the slide was caused by ground water saturation from recent heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Snohomish County through Sunday afternoon.

If the blockage in the river gives way, flooding downstream toward the larger community of Arlington was possible, forecasters said.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee also proclaimed a state of emergency.

Spokesman Bart Treece of the Washington State Department of Transportation said he didn’t know how long the two-lane rural road will be closed. Drivers were advised to find another way to get between Darrington and Arlington, he said.

“We’re standing by ready to help out where we can,” Treece said.

  1. WOW. This about ten miles from my AO. I didn’t even hear of it till I read it here on FTTWR. Shows how much I listen to mainstream news reports. I will have to go check this out today, there are many of our people up there. With the state and other agencies getting involved now you can bet it will turn into a clusterf@#k. 1. Yes Angel, I have been following this on the centurylink site and what really bothers me is that I haven`t heard one mention of the police or rescue squads bringing out their so called search and rescue dogs!! .
Have you heard anything about searchand reascue dogs because I haven`t heard even one word of that.
Seems that they would have had their high buck S and R dogs right there as a part of the first responders.

          1. Yes Angel, I am guessing you are right. However I always thought that these S and R dogs were there to save human life reguardless of conditions.
I use to be around trainers that trained service dogs including military and police dogs – I didn`t know it at the time – and they said that these search and rescue dogs are there to save and to find human life at all costs and they also included cadaver dogs along with s and r dogs.
Kind of bothers me that there are no dogs out there because if they are not useing dogs then they should have the cops and other rescue organizations out there like they would in a foreign country say like central mexico – after a earth quake or a volcano eruption ya know – as they have done in the past in those foreign countries..

  2. @ digger – Yes, but in this case, how would the dogs get through the extremely deep (60 feet, foxnews says up to 180 feet) quicksand-like mud? Take them up and drop them from helicopters? Deep mud and water are different conditions than earthquakes, aftermath of volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, tornadoes, building collapses, explosions, etc.

    1. Yes Angel, I guess that you are right on that.
Those trainers that I was unknowingly around were chest thumping holy rollers that couldn`t back up their own talk ya know and that is how I found out about them trainers.
Yea they were the ones that planted sh*t on me and it also back fired on them.
Yes I am very critical of them hippocrites and how they talk and act untill they got to back it up.
Yea those trainers were world class by the way and they are still out there doing their service dog training . they are still famous with swat and PD`s around the world. Yea they are relly a POS and I know that first hand by accident – I know because I was unknowingly getting set up big time by them F`ers – yea it is on public record by the way 😐
