Neighborhood post offices could soon shutter without emergency funding from Congress, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned Sunday.
Letter volume at the United States Postal Service has fallen by roughly 30% since the coronavirus pandemic began to batter the country’s economy in March, but package deliveries have gone up by as much as 20%.
Still, the USPS needs millions to pay for additional protective equipment for front-line employees — and officials estimate the reduction in mail could force revenue to fall by at least $22 billion through the end of 2021.
Schumer said the service needs $25 billion to avoid major cuts that could leave many Americans who live in areas not served by large commercial shippers like UPS and FedEx without a way to get mail.
“Neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night nor pandemic can stop the Postal Service,” Schumer said at a news conference. “Unlike the big shippers who pick and choose where they want to go, this truck goes everywhere.”
In May, the House included $25 billion in USPS relief through the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, but Senate Republicans held up its passage and then recessed this month.
Schumer said he’ll push for postal service relief funding when the Senate returns Monday. He said he won’t back a bill that does not include the money — and said the sanctity of November’s elections depend on a fully functioning postal system.
“We’re going to have a lot of voting by mail,” said Schumer. “We don’t have a postal service, how are people going to vote by mail? How are the votes going to be counted? How are we going to have an accurate election?”
