One sheriff’s deputy died and another was wounded in an Indiana shootout while serving a warrant for drug-related offenses on Sunday, police said.
An unidentified suspect also died in the gunfire, they added.
Deputy Carl Koontz, 27, of the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, died at a hospital after being shot in Russiaville, a town about 50 miles north of Indianapolis, police said. Deputy Sergeant Jordan Buckley was in stable condition at a hospital.
The deputies were shot after they knocked on the door of a residence to serve the warrant, police said. They then returned fire.
“With an extremely heavy heart I’m sorry to report Deputy Carl Koontz has succumbed to his wounds,” State Police spokesman Sergeant John Perrine said on his Twitter feed.
Koontz had been with the State Police for nearly three years, while Buckley was a nine-year veteran, Perrine said.
Indiana Governor Mike Pence directed state facilities to fly flags at half-staff in honor of Koontz’s “service and sacrifice,” he tweeted.
Koontz is survived by his wife and a young son, the Indianapolis Star newspaper reported.

A former Pennsyvlania trooper killed a toll collector and a retired cop during an armed robbery at a toll booth on Sunday morning, before officers fatally shot him in a gunfight.
The gunman, Clarence Briggs, 55, drove up to the Fort Littleton Interchange in Fulton County at 7 a.m. on Sunday, and flashed his pistol at a toll collector, demanding him and another employee into a nearby office building, Turnpike chairman Sean Logan said.
Briggs attempted to tie up the two but ran off after a struggle, police said.
Ronald Heist, a security officer and retired York city cop, drove up in an armored car with Danny Crouse, a toll collector who started his job less than 3 months ago. Briggs gunned down both the 71-year-old officer and the 55-year-old collector before stealing the armored car.

Excellent! Another dead pig. And it’s a bonus that he was killed while in the process of enforcing laws against victimless offenses.
Another Pawn sacrificed in a war that is not sustainable.

I’m so sorry…..that I don’t really give a rat’s ass about that uniformed thug or that zero fu@ks were given.
This week alone I’ve read about a teenage boy that got punched by a police officer while being ‘reprimanded’ school, A 6 year old girl put in handcuffs at school for taking candy, and I watched a man who was cooperating get pulled in 8 directions and shocked by yelling cops. THEN I see the police department claims there was no wrong doing.
So how do I feel about this police officer dying at the hands of ‘we the people’….pretty A-OK. You HAVE to be a sociopath to become a police officer. Cops are just plain immoral, BAD, people with no Duty to Protect individuals per the US Supreme Court.
Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish!
Wow… how did I miss commenting on this one yesterday…

OUTSTANDING!!!
Well, as Diggerdan would say, “Good, a pig is a pig is a pig!” It’s unfortunate a more severe spanking wasn’t administered. They got it comin’, for sure.
Even better that the POS was serving a warrant for… guess what?
