Teen Girls Invent Solar-Powered Tent For Homeless, No Engineering Experience, Win MIT Grant

Natural Blaze

Homelessness is on the rise in the city of Los Angeles, and residents of the city are coming together to come up with solutions to the growing issue.

A group of students at the San Fernando High School decided to make an effort on their own.

They had no invention or engineering experience and were able to build a roll up tent that runs on solar power, and can be carried in a backpack. The would-be builders were recruited by DIY Girls, which is a non-profit organization thats goal is to inspire teen girls living in low-income families in LA to work towards an education in engineering and technology.

The executive director of DIY Girls, Evelyn Gomez, lead the project where she helped when needed and could, but was under control by the 12 girls all the way to the end.

Through the help of searches on Google and videos on Youtube, the girls teamed together and worked on the tent through coding, sewing and 3-D printing over the year.

The hard work earned them a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT program, and their invention is being displayed ar MIT’s EurekaFest on June 16. The girls almost didn’t make it to the trip being in poor families, but luckily, a GoFundMe page was made to raise money to bring them to the event. The page received $18,000 in donated funds.

  1. Wow. This is just f–king great.
When the criminals finish stealing all my property and I’m homeless, I can just go live in my solar powered tent.
If I can afford to buy one.
Being homeless, I probably won’t have much money.
I better start saving up for one right now.

      1. “Sniff…”
Why you gotta shatter my dreams, man?
        I had it all planned.
I was going to get a j-o-b on the assembly line that manufactures the solar powered tent and buy one using my 10% employee discount.
Sure, I’d have to eat a half a bowl of rice instead of a full bowl for a while but eventually I’d get me one of them tents.
Then here you come along and stomp all over everything.
        I’m so depressed now.
        (jokin)

    1. Hmmmmm….I’ve never met anyone named Maria with blonde hair…and unless you’re a wealthy jooo living in Hollywood hills or at the beach, every female in Commiefornia is named Maria.
It’s just about the numbers, Hatr…LOL

  2. OK, wait!!!! In another article here on FTTWR today, geoengineering is being used to BLOCK the sun (Al Gore, global warming, et al.). If there’s no sunshine, these poor homeless folks aren’t gonna get much use from these expensive tents!

  3. So we are reduced to this? No plans to really help these people, no plans to get them training or a real home or a job so they can support themselves. The great plan from these befuddled teens is to give them discounted tents with a solar panel? WTF OVER?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
