Two people trampled to death by camel at Texas farm

A “large aggressive” camel trampled to death two people at a farm in Texas, according to law enforcement authorities.

Deputies from the Wichita Falls Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Camel Kisses Camel Farm Saturday afternoon and found a very aggressive camel with blood on his chest and on his mouth.

They found the bodies of 53-year-old Mark Mere and 72-year-old Peggy McNair, the owner of the farm, near where the camel was standing. Game wardens killed the animal.

“A large aggressive camel was in the area as well, and it took deputies several minutes to move it to another location,” Wichita County Sheriff David Duke said in a news release. It appears that both victims were trampled by the camel.”

KFDX-TV quoted Duke as saying the camel was acting aggressively. The camel was in a pen with two female camels. Mere entered the pen because the water trough had frozen and then was attacked.

The station reported that as Mere tried to get out of the pen, McNair tried to close the gate and the camel attacked both of them.

Their bodies were sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy.

The Wichita Falls Times Record News said McNair, a former bank vice president, had raised camels for nearly 20 years.

The paper said the farm and the camels were a popular attraction for children.

Wichita Falls is on the border with Oklahoma.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  1. I think we oughta’ waterboard those ignorant camels to attain information about who’s actually behind all of this global hijinx. It obviously isn’t us, whoever we are but I’d walk a mile to talk to a well informed camel .Even if it was just about the weather. Camels will never admit responsibility and the haplessly deceased simply won’t have the opportunity to bitch.Camels are kinda like government huh?

  2. What an odd story. I know camels can have nasty dispositions as in they spit, but I didn’t know they act aggressively or attack people. Strange. Were they abused?
    . . .

    1. Female camels in heat, normal male reaction. Try being in the same pasture with a ram or a bull with ewes or cows in heat. Best being on the outside looking in. He went in to clear the ice from the drinking water. He should have had better backup than the 72 year old owner. My wife worries all the time during breeding season when I’m around pigs, sheep, or cattle, any one of which can kill you in a heartbeat. Camels are larger than horses, therefore more dangerous. Farming is much more dangerous than being a cop.

  3. As Falls Wichita…So Falls Wichita Falls.
    Obscure 1980’s music reference.
    Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.

  4. The male camel was in rut and as many of us in moose territory know, a rutting herbivore can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. That includes deer.
