6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes ocean floor south of Fiji Islands

March 2014 – FIJI – A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has occurred south of the Fiji Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was at a depth of 295 miles. The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports, “Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.” –HNN
