James Cromwell, who has been in more than 100 films and television shows, was arrested on Texas A&M’s campus Thursday after authorities said he disrupted a Board of Regents meeting.

According to Texas A&M University Police Department spokesman Lt. Bobby Richardson, Cromwell, 79, was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 p.m. The New York resident was escorted from the Memorial Student Center’s Bethancourt Ballroom, where a Texas A&M University System Board of Regents meeting had just started. Richardson said several people — including Cromwell — believed to have been affiliated with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, were at the meeting.

Richardson said Cromwell and a 34-year-old man from Salt Lake City were verbally disruptive as the regents attempted to conduct business. The two were asked to stop their behavior, but did not heed the request and were taken into custody, officials said.

The men are charged with hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and $4,000 in fines. Both men have been released, each on a $5,000 bond.

PETA representatives said Cromwell was part of a group protesting A&M’s use of dogs for medical research.

According to The Associated Press, in a statement issued before the demonstration, Cromwell said that “caging and hurting golden retrievers is unethical and bad science, and it needs to end now.”

Texas A&M University announced recently that it was reducing its breeding of dogs for medical research.

  1. cromwell is an actor. He has been paid handsomely for his contributions. While he is absolutely right in calling out their horrific crimes against animals AND humans, I doubt his motives are anything but sincere. His surname betrays him. It’s a deviation of mine and for that I dislike him just a bit more than him being hollyweird and sharing the bastard name of oliver cromwell. Spit. End.

  2. Shoot an unarmed Palestinian kid? 30 day community service. Speak out and disrupt a meeting? One year and/or $4000.

Glad there’s so much ‘balance’ out there.

  3. I find it hilarious that the next article is about pigs, as this is about the guy that said, “That’ll do, Pig, that’ll do.”
