Antigovernment Militia Groups Grew by More than One-Third in Last Year

The armed takeover of a federal government building in Oregon comes amid a renewed expansion of the far-right, antigovernment militia movement in the wake of the 2014 standoff between federal agents and heavily armed antigovernment activists in the Nevada desert.

In its annual count of militias, released today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified 276 militia groups – up from 202 in 2014, a 37 percent increase.

The number represents a renewal of growth after several years of declines. The movement grew explosively after President Obama was elected, from 42 groups in 2008 to a peak of 334 in 2011 before declining in recent years.

What’s happening in Oregon was entirely predictable.

“We believe these armed extremists have been emboldened by what they saw as a clear victory at the Cliven Bundy ranch and the fact that no one was held accountable for taking up arms against agents of the federal government,” said Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC’s Intelligence Project.

Among the militiamen occupying buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, Oregon, are Cliven Bundy’s sons, Ammon and Ryan Bundy.

“When the federal government was stopped from enforcing the law at gunpoint, it energized the entire movement,” Beirich said. “The fact is, Bundy is still a free man and has not paid the money he owes to the federal government – and the militiamen who aimed rifles at federal agents have gotten away with it.”

The militia groups included in the SPLC count typically adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines and subscribe to groundless conspiracy theories about the federal government.

  1. They’re not even close. Some folks aren’t stupid enough to join anyone or anything. Talk about playing wack-a-mole. Dumb priks.

    Armed extremists?

That would be the SPLC, and their masters & minions, you commie jewb#tch whore.

      1. Don’t say that! Your phone and e-mail will be overwhelmed with calls from the SPLC on where to meet. I’m betting that the offices in the SPLC building are equipped with glory holes.

  3. “In its annual count of militias, released today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified 276 militia groups – up from 202 in 2014, a 37 percent increase.”

That’s funny. There are probably more than that in any given state. (or are they talking about Oregon only?)

    1. That is the number of groups that they have infiltrated. How else would they know the number. Most don’t have websites or otherwise advertise.

  4. I’d make the bet that the numbers are wrong that they have or went by
and there are groups that don’t even identify with the militia or its mind set , yet are even larger and better trained , and haven’t even exposed themselves yet
And the establishment has no one to blame for this but itself

    1. The ones that are larger, quite and better trained put the fear of God into the so-called establishment.

    Just make your own up.

We can unite and re-group after the first wave of battle.
A LOT won’t make it a week and many groups may go from dozens to a few in 1 afternoon. Now you have to train for the gay ’emotional response’ of loosing your chain of command and assuming leadership positions in battle conditions blah blah. HR crap Whats next. thank you buttons?

If you make it. You will join with who ever you can/must.
It’s natural. It’s easy. Humans are lazy.

    1. My thoughts as well Misty. If someone were to ask me if I were anti-government, I would answer their question with your question, just to watch the clueless expression on their face.

      1. Wear plastic or a tyvek suit, Deb. It keeps the small brain from their exploding head off your inner attire. There’s a lot of layers to this onion called “politics”. None of which are political as politics involves the voices of many debating the pros and cons of the constituency. There is only one voice currently heard in this argument.

        Currently is the operative word.

        1. Oh Martist! Haha! What a visual I got from that tyvek suit! The Don and his hair piece were literally a ten minute drive from my house yesterday. Had I read a local paper or listened to the news I would have showed up decked out I that attire! I heard the sheep were chanting for Bernie Sanders. It seems the peeps are hungry for socialism. Wow!

          1. My laughter will either help or hurt my digestive process but either way I am glad to be laughing! 🙂 haha The sheeple gobble this garbage up! Mind boggling!

  6. Boo-hoo-hoo. “Everytime I think about these kids, it makes me mad.” It makes me mad that you still breath air, Monkey Boy. What a dickwad!

  7. More drama by the SPLC. They must be overcome by the methane from having their heads up someones ass for extended periods of time.

Firstly, these groups aren’t anti-government militia, they are just Anti-government. Even the most kool-aid saturated dolts can see the gov’t is off the rails.

Secondly, Militias, as they are presently, are under counted by a factor of at least 10. There is going to be more of a backlash than these zionists can imagine.

Thirdly, I’ve seen no EXTREME behavior by anyone but the gov’t thugs anywhere in the US.

We’re waiting for the gov’t to finally go for broke. If they have the cojones. They are a tiresome bunch. Always talking smack, and not acting. These propagandists are working overtime. It’s getting old. Same old song & dance. Sign all the paper you want Barry. We’ll be waiting right over here……

  8. As a citizen of the United States, you are a member of the Constitutionally guaranteed unorganized militia.

Everything you have heard about militias from the media is likely wrong. Main stream news has primarily reported on the negative stereotypes and criminal activity of groups that have nothing to do with militia. The true militia has exactly the opposite purpose; to uphold the truths and ideals represented in the Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The Militia is a community of patriots, true believers in a good and free America. We believe in traditional values of faith, family and work, and in an absolute right to self preservation. We believe in self determination, in limited government, and in honoring and maintaining the republic as it was designed more than 200 years ago.

  9. Those numbers are kinda on the low end considering everything… Oh well, just remember whatever number IS correct, there are probably two or three times as many groups that are NOT openly publishing themselves and are “underground” militias that do not want to be seen till they strike.

  10. “We believe these armed extremists”

Extremists? Gee…now you are making them out to be terrorists. Great choice of words! I’m sure that’s exactly why you chose to use them.

The MSM and elitist bastards are doing everything they can this time to demonize militias and make them appear to be the equivalent of terrorists or extremists.

  11. SPLC? Why post anything from that entity?
“In its annual count of militias, released today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified 276 militia groups – up from 202 in 2014, a 37 percent increase.”
How do you identify normal people that do not speak with you or participate in polls?
And what is southern poverty law all about? Is there not lawyers for northern impoverished people or any one from the countries we rape and pillage?
    They have no clue.
