NEWARK — A gasoline tanker exploded on McCarter Highway early this morning and burned through thousands of gallons of gasoline, shutting the highway and interrupting statewide train service through Newark Penn Station, authorities said.

Austin, Texas (CNN) — An intoxicated driver fleeing police plowed his car into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, killing two people, authorities said early Thursday.
The man and woman killed were riding their light motorcycles, said Art Acevedo, chief of the Austin Police Department.

A Manhattan trader was killed Tuesday morning by a speeding Long Island Rail Road commuter train, marking at least the seventh suicide of a financial professional this year.
Edmund (Eddie) Reilly, 47, a trader at Midtown’s Vertical Group, jumped in front of an LIRR train at 6 a.m. near the Syosset train station.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported late Wednesday a government website has satellite images of suspected debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane that vanished last week with 239 aboard.
According to the report, the satellite images from the morning of March 9 appear to show “three suspected floating objects” of varying sizes in the sea off the southern tip of Vietnam and east of Malaysia – a part of the original search area for the aircraft, which was enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. A U.S. Senate panel on Wednesday approved legislation that would impose strict sanctions on Russians involved in Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine, provide aid to the new government in Kiev, and implement reforms of the International Monetary Fund.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 14-3 for the measure, with several committee Republicans joining the Democratic majority in favor. The bill next goes to the full Senate for a vote. Individuals in Mexican military uniforms drew their guns on a U.S. border agent earlier this year after having crossed the southwestern border into Arizona, a U.S. senator claimed, raising concerns once again that Mexican officials are illegally crossing into the U.S. and, worse, potentially aiding the drug cartels.
The incident described by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would appear to be one of dozens over the past decade where Mexican military and law enforcement officers have crossed into U.S. territory. The Oakland Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/lvtufr3 ) reported Saturday that since Sunnyvale’s ban went into effect midnight Thursday, not one of the now-illegal magazines has been turned in. San Francisco police report that they have no system to track whether any magazines have been turned in for destruction under the new ordinance.
