The Organic Prepper

If you’ve noticed that it takes a lot more money to live the middle-class American Dream than it used to, you aren’t alone. Buying a house, saving for retirement, and putting your kids through college while living comfortably is a whole lot harder than it once was. Being part of the middle class sure isn’t what it used to be.

Despite the rosy outlook on employment numbers, things have become incredibly difficult for many families. They’re deeply in debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and without an emergency fund. Let’s take a look at what the media is saying about the middle class.   Continue reading “The Middle Class Sure Isn’t What It Used to Be”

It’s been said that when the U.S. sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold.  Inflation by overall annual average has been below target for some years now, since 2012 to be exact. The Fed usually seeks a 2% inflation as a comfort zone.

Granted, it’s only one data point but with unemployment currently low and some signs that economic growth is accelerating, the suggestion exists that overheating/inflation is a risk for the U.S. economy in a way that hasn’t existed for about ten years.   Continue reading “Everything You Need to Know About Inflation”

The ten year U.S. Treasury Bonds rose above 3% for the first time since January 2011.  The main reason is speculation that the Fed will seek an increasingly aggressive rise in interest rates.   Yields rose as Fed officials talk of raising interest rates four times this year instead of the previously discussed three times.

Rising interest rates can have a significant effect on the economy and your finances on a personal level.   Continue reading “10 Year Treasury Yield Hits 3% (Here’s What This Means for your Wallet)”

In the role of Information Specialist of a prepper group you may or may not also be the Communications Specialist (radio operator) of the group. Either way, you will likely have input as to the tools and information should be gathered for emergency communications means.

During a disaster, you need to stay abreast of the events going on around you. In a weather emergency, such as a hurricane, tornado watch or warning, or winter storm, you need an NOAA weather radio or a radio capable of receiving NOAA weather broadcasts.  Continue reading “The Tools and Information Preppers Need for Emergency Communications”

It’s that time of the year again! EWG has announced it’s annual “Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen” list of the foods that are the most contaminated with pesticides. Meanwhile, nutrition “experts” are telling consumers that the list isn’t important and that we should completely ignore the shopper’s guide.

Why is this list so important?   Continue reading “EWG’s 2018 Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 Lists (and Why “Experts” Are Telling Us to Ignore Them)”

Every day, we make a million small decisions. What we’ll eat for lunch, who to ask a question at the office, which route to take home, whether we should pick up takeout or cook dinner, if we want to take a walk, who will drive the kids to practice, and when to go to bed.

None of these things seems overly important, but sometimes the small decisions can have big effects. Sometimes they don’t really matter, and sometimes they can be the difference whether you live or die.   Continue reading “The Big Importance of Small Decisions”

Global economy and geopolitics are underpinning the oil price surge and gas prices are going up.

Who recalls the oil embargo of 1973?  That was when the Arab-dominated Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced they were cutting oil exports to the United States and other countries that provided military aid to Israel during the Yom Kippur War of October 1973.   Continue reading “Here’s Why Gas Prices Are Skyrocketing Right Now”

Looking back, there were warning signs. First, let me tell you what life used to be like before the Venezuelan economic collapse.

I usually wake up early in the morning, without too much complaint. When I was working in an oil facility 58 kilometers away from home, I had to be out of bed and ready for the bus at 5:20 AM. My wife took me to the bus stop, where the corporate bus would pick me up at 5:45. We were in the office by 7 o’clock.  Continue reading “EYEWITNESS: Warning Signs That Should Have Told Us the Collapse of Venezuela Was Near”

Everyone is talking about World War III right now, and I hate to be the one to say this, but…all I can wonder is whether we’re being manipulated into a fight we can’t win. This is probably going to make some folks mad, but there are some facts, statistics, and unanswered questions that support my premise.

Picture this.   Continue reading “World War III: Are We Being Manipulated Into a Fight We Can’t Win?”

The intention of this article will be to describe how the prices went wild, and what you could expect in a hyperinflation scenario. Perhaps softer, or perhaps worse, that is not possible to know for an amateur like me, not being an economist. But something similar to this is what could be expected in the real world, not in some hypothetical scenario of the theoretical economy..  Continue reading “What Hyperinflation in Venezuela Really Looks Like”

Is the carton of eggs in your refrigerator part of the biggest egg recall since 2010?  Rose Acre Farms has voluntarily recalled 206,749,248 eggs after 22 people became ill with salmonella after consuming their products. Take a look at the news any day of the week and you’ll see stories of people affected by disasters: from entire communities dealing with the aftermath of tornadoes and large-scale flooding to families rebuilding after house fires and ruptured pipes caused by freezing weather. They all face the daunting prospect of starting over.

No matter what the cause, each of these people will deal not only with physical loss but with emotional trauma and financial impacts. Even the most prepared among us may someday deal with a catastrophe at the community or personal level that can’t be stopped, and we’ll have to decide whether to rebuild in place or start over elsewhere.  Continue reading “How to Start Over After a Disaster”

It’s time to address an epidemic in the United States. It’s one that could be deadly, particularly to liberty.

It’s an epidemic of Dunning-Kruger. It’s why ignorant people are so certain that they’re right.

Last week was a busy one for economic news, what with a looming tariff war and a job report that is nothing to write home about.

As I wrote earlier, the world’s economy was shakey last week, and the tariff war between the US and China has sent shock waves through the US market.  To refresh, here’s a list of all the products that will be affected should this come to fruition. (And there’s every indication that this is just the beginning.)   Continue reading “What Happened in Economic News Last Week Could Signal a Massive Change for All of Us”
