The nuclear standoff between the United States and North Korea has intensified to a level that can lead nowhere good. It’s time to talk about how to prepare for a nuclear attack.

First, here’s some of the recent chatter.

Last weekend, incendiary words between the two countries leave little doubt in anyone’s mind that a nuclear attack is likely to happen. The international smack-talk is leading somewhere.  Continue reading “Here’s How to Prepare for a Nuclear Attack”

New reviews have shown that Monsanto’s Round-Up is not carcinogenic. The weed killer is perfectly safe, despite the World Health Organizations proclamation in 2015 that glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Round-Up, was “probably” carcinogenic.

This proclamation was met with outrage from Monsanto and a series of “independent” reviews that all agreed that the World Health Organization was wrong.  Continue reading “Guess Who Edited the “Independent” Reviews That Say Monsanto’s Round-Up Is NOT Carcinogenic?”

If your kids are enrolled in school, you know that back to school shopping can make this the second most expensive time of the year.

This year, the National Retail Federation expects back to school spending to reach $83.6 billion dollars. This is a 10% increase over last year’s spending. The average expenditure is $687.72 per child. (source)   Continue reading “The Average American Spends $687.72 Per Kid for Back to School Shopping”

There’s a new kind of “privilege” in town, and if you suffer from it, you can’t help it any more than you can help your skin color or your gender. (Although, of late, gender seems to be completely open to debate and have nothing to do with biology.) If you are an intelligent person, you have “cognitive privilege” according to an op-ed in the Daily Iowan.

Well, that’s just really not fair, is it?   Continue reading “It’s Not Fair: Smart People Need to Check Their “Cognitive Privilege””

Survival Saturday is a round-up of the week’s news and resources for folks who are interested in being prepared.

This Week in the News

This week, it seems inevitable that we are headed straight to war. When Trump was elected, the fact that he seemed committed to getting along with Russia gave many people hope that a global conflict could be averted. That and the repeal of Obamacare seemed like the light at the end of the tunnel of a contentious election.  Continue reading “Is World War 3 Inevitable?”

Everyone has heard of those crazy folks who are all ready to hunker down in a bunker with some buckets of freeze-dried food and a bunch of guns – it’s the fodder of quirky news stories and the avatar of many a deranged serial killer in the movies. So how does a perfectly normal person end up turning into a survivalist prepper?

I get asked this a lot because I come across as fairly normal and sane. But, despite my average-mom exterior, I’ve been a prepper for more than 20 years and there’s most likely a gun tucked away in my girlie-looking purse.   Continue reading “How a Nice Girl Like Me Turned Into a Gun-Toting Survivalist Prepper”

Those who believe that our own government is perfectly willing to commit an atrocity and then blame it on someone else tend to deny threats when they’re brought up consistently by the media. Let’s take the North Korea nuclear menace, for example.

I’ve been writing about the rising threat from North Korea for a long time and each time I publish a piece about their missile capability or some outrageous offense, it never fails that someone pops up and says, “North Korea doesn’t matter. The government is just making them the bad guy so the US can take military action and the people will support it.”  Continue reading “Here’s Why It Doesn’t Matter If North Korea Is Actually a Nuclear Threat”

It’s always interesting reading when someone smug and sanctimonious writes a clueless diatribe about another group of people being smug and sanctimonious. So when I saw that an economist for Moody’s and Forbes had written an op-ed calling self-reliant homesteaders “delusional,” I knew I’d be in for some misinformed hilarity.

The article, entitled, “Dear Homesteaders, Self-Reliance Is a Delusion” was published a couple of days ago on the Forbes website. You’ll be forewarned that the article won’t be deep in the first paragraph, when the author presents his claim to knowledge about self-reliant living comes from the fact that he is “a big fan of shows about doomsday preppers, homesteaders, survivalists, generally people who live off the grid.”   Continue reading “Forbes Says Self-Reliant Homesteaders Are “Delusional” and “Mooching” Off “Civil Society””

These days, it’s increasingly common to have a chronic illness or disability, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be prepared.

We live in a toxic society and a land of chronic illness. Whether you blame this on the environment, chemicals in everything we ingest and inhale, or some other facet of American life, more and more people are becoming seriously ill for a long period of time. As I wrote recently:  Continue reading “10 Tips for Preppers with a Chronic Illness or Disability”

Would the new bill that the Senate has quietly passed actually remove executive powers from the President and start a war with Russia?

Our US Congress is filled with criminals, liars, people with serious health problems that could impair their judgment, and lifers with all the signs of advancing dementia, and yet these people are making decisions that could mean the difference between life and death for the rest of us while completely circumventing the checks and balances put in place by the Constitution.  Continue reading “Congress Wants to Start a War with Russia Using Senate Bill 722”

We all like to scoff at that crazy little dictator, Kim Jong Un, who is a walking caricature, putting himself on the cover of a magazine as the sexiest man alive and talking smack like a WWF champ. But, in all seriousness, is North Korea actually a threat?

Unfortunately, it looks like the answer to that question is yes…and they’re turning into a bigger one each year.   Continue reading “How Much of a Nuclear Threat is North Korea Really?”

The era of artificial intelligence and technological deceit is upon us. If you think “fake news” and propaganda is bad right now, just wait.

And you won’t have to wait very long, at that.

Pretty soon, computer wizardry and artificial intelligence will allow video footage to be created that is practically indiscernible from the real deal. Add to this holograph technology, and soon, a person could appear to be speaking, live, in front of you, and you’d never even know it was all fake. The ethical ramifications of AI and technology are simply mind-boggling. In fact, some folks even believe it will signal the beginning of the end of humanity.

Bush Brothers and Company have issued a voluntary recall of several varieties of their famous baked beans.

The reason for the recall? There is a quality issue with the side seam of certain cans which was discovered when the products began to leak out the seams.

As any home-canner knows, this kind of issue means that the product within is at a high risk for botulism. Botulism is a potentially deadly form of food poisoning, and if the victim survives, they can suffer lifelong neurological issues.   Continue reading “Potential Botulism Risk: Recall of Bush’s Baked Beans”

Sometimes you have to think that scientists don’t ever read science fiction, and thus have not even contemplated all the things that could go wrong when they do something like creating 20 million mosquitos in a laboratory, infecting them with a bacteria, and then releasing those mosquitos in Fresno, California.

First of all, did you even know that Google had a bio-lab?  They do and it’s called Verily. Which, I dunno, sounds rather biblical. “Verily, I say unto you…we are the purveyors of all that is The Truth.”   Continue reading “What Could Possibly Go Wrong When Google Releases Millions of “Lab-Made” Mosquitos in Fresno?”

In the hierarchy of water, from municipal to well to purchased, bottled water is generally heralded as the purest drinking water you can get. But is it really?

Often, the bottled water for which you pay a high premium is simply the same water you get from the tap, run through a purification process. In other words, it’s the same thing you could do with your faucet and a Big Berkey. (And if you add some special filters, you’ll be sure to get the fluoride out.)   Continue reading “Where Does Your Favorite Brand of Bottled Water Actually Come From?”

In a shocking video from Venezuela, we learn that it takes approximately 5 years for society to break down into a full-on Mad Max scenario. Watch below as a group of motorcyclists attacks a truck carrying sugar by surrounding the vehicle and tossing grenades in front of it. Independence is about a whole lot more than firing up the barbecue, drinking some beer with friends, and shooting off fireworks. It’s about more than blindly waving a flag.

It’s about the way we live our lives every single day. And 241 years later, independence is still the most revolutionary act you can commit.

Now, regardless of how you feel about this administration or the previous one, I think we can all agree that many of the liberties our parents took for granted are now in trouble.  Continue reading “Independence Is Still a Revolutionary Act”
