Boise man arrested on federal terrorism charges

KTVB News 7

BOISE — Federal agents have arrested 30-year-old Fazliddin Kurbanov, who was living at a Boise Bench home, as part of a federal terrorism investigation.

The U.S. Attorney says federal terrorism charges were filed Thursday afternoon in Boise and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Kurbanov is an Uzbekistan national and is legally in the United States.

Police and FBI agents were at a home near South Curtis Road and West Cassia Street this morning.

FBI agents appeared to be processing both an apartment unit and a vehicle on Cassia Street. The agents are in a clearly marked van with the words “Evidence Response Team.”

Neighbors tell KTVB about six unmarked black vehicles arrived at the Glenbrook apartment complex around 10:30 a.m. Thursday and started the investigation.

Kurbanov has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boise on three counts; one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device.

A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City also returned an indictment charging Kurbanov with one count of distribution of information relating to explosives, destructive devices, and weapons of mass destruction.

Government officials say this arrest was the culmination of an investigation by the FBI’s Salt Lake Division, which covers Idaho and Utah; and Joint Terrorism Task Forces in Idaho and Utah, which include a number of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Federal agents have been closely monitoring Kurbanov’s activities for any potential threat.

Kurbanov is scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court in Boise Friday morning. He will be transferred to Utah at the conclusion of the prosecution in Idaho.

“Today’s arrest and these indictments underscore our commitment to aggressively and thoroughly investigate those who conspire to engage in unlawful terrorist activities,” said U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson. “The thorough and exhaustive work of our JTTF, in partnership with our investigating and prosecuting partners in Utah, Colorado and at the National Security Division, put a stop to this criminal activity and ensured the public’s safety. I commend the men and women at every level of law enforcement, including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, Ada County and Canyon County Sheriff’s Offices and the Boise City Police Department, who assisted in this effort.”

“Today’s arrest underscores the need for continued vigilance against terrorist threats both at home and abroad. I thank the many agents, analysts and prosecutors responsible for this important investigation,” said John Carlin, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

KTVB has learned that Kurbanov has a police record here in Idaho. He was pulled over for traffic violations in three different Idaho counties over the past two years.

  1. Made a few calls; seems that this guy was holding classes on “How To” in the Muslim community of Boise.

What I found interesting is the amount of personal conflict among the people I talked to. It ranges from non existent Immigration Policy, wide-spread mistrust of Federal LEO to out-right broad sweeping Terrorist definitions. The other was total disbelief of Smalltown, USA being a training ground for Foreign Terrorists. I do know, from talking to recently retired LEOs, that this is one of the biggest fears for small-mid-size towns in the U.S.

  2. One would think that the CIA & Mossad already have ENOUGH terrorist training facilities overseas as it is.
