Connecticut assault victim gets 18 months in jail for stabbing attacker

Fox News

A Connecticut man who was assaulted by three juveniles while at work has been sentenced to prison for stabbing one of the attackers.

The Connecticut Post reports 21-year-old Jeffrey Sumpter of Bridgeport received 18 months in jail Monday at a Stamford courthouse.

The paper reported that Sumpter — who was convicted of felony first-degree assault — also will have to spend three years following his release on probation. If he breaks the law during that time, Sumpter could be made to serve all or part of a 42-month prison sentence.

Sumpter was working at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Norwalk last October when he was jumped by three males. During the assault, Sumpter stabbed one of them in the leg.

“I was defending myself,” Sumpter said during the hearing.

Judge John Blawie told Sumpter that he believed his version of events, but had to follow the letter of the law.

Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states — most notably Florida — have passed so-called “stand-your-ground” laws, which entitle citizens to use force in self-defense if there is a reasonable belief of a threat.

  1. “Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers.”

What was he supposed to do? Kindly ask the three thugs to pause their attack so he could make a safe retreat?!? Once anyone makes the decision to attack another person, their own health, safety, and even life are forfeit. Since when is a non-lethal stab wound considered “deadly force”? CT has some pretty stupid “laws”.

    1. maybe he should have ‘stopped dropped and rolled’……….oh wait, that’s if you catch fire….. ‘duck and cover’?……no, no, that’s for nuclear attack or is that if there’s an earthquake? I can’t keep it all straight. Perhaps the commies could come up with a catchy phrase so we know what we’re supposed to do other than follow our instincts to survive

      1. Good one, Mary. Yeah, he could also have remembered: “Just Say No.” Ha!

        Or maybe,

        Desert Your Ground!

        Surrender Dorothy!

        To Wimp Is To Win!

        Your Life Before Mine!

Stop Resisting! (a favorite of you-know-whom)

        Die A Peaceful Man!

Of course, he could take some counsel from the early days of rape advice: Jus’ Let ‘Em! (not on your life buddy)

Now we also need “catch phrases” for what he COULD do.

Let The Fright Ignite Your Fight!

        Go For The Jugular!

It’s You Or Me, Baby! (and it ain’t gonna be me)

        Bring It, MoFo!

        To Wimp Is To Die!!

This story made me feel like punching. A good thing I have a punching bag.

        🙂

  2. Hey dick judge as well as those that got that piece of crap legislation onto the books declaring one cannot use deadly force but must retreat, your “law” does not trump my innate natural instincts of self preservation, so stick it!

  3. Part of the problem here is that the attackers were unarmed. Even in some states with “stand your ground laws”, you can’t defend yourself from a punch with a knife.

In this case there were three attackers, so stabbing them should have been justifiable, but I don’t know how things work in Connecticut. Check local laws before stabbing the bastards.

Also…. if he was “jumped by three males”, I don’t see how he had the means to retreat if the law did require it.

  4. I’ve seen several articles recently which reported the arrest of someone for defending themselves, so this may be part of an effort to remove people’s right to self-defense. (it always begins with the propaganda)

  5. I think the Judge needs to be put in this situation,, so he can do 18 months too

    fken tool

  7. I thought it was up to the JURY to decide if he had done wrong not the damned judge! No state can pass ANY law that restricts your right to defend your life and property whether they like it or not! All the more reason this is going to be a shooting match and one more reason why we need to kill them ALL.

  8. Since the first Ruler made the first law,
the laws have had NO foundation in morality.
Laws are just arbitrary rules of the ruling class.

I wonder how heavily the judge is invested it the penal system?

  9. This is the ugliest story today. Their laws, their edicts, their regulations, statutes, rules, orders, commands, they ATTEMPT to mess with our most natural tendencies of self-preservation. This is a concerted effort to morph the human spirit into a plate of compliant Jello. I hope there is mega outcry. Would also like to get the address of the young man subjected to a year and a half in jail, just for trying to not die. It would be great to launch a letter-writing campaign telling him he did nothing wrong, he actually did the best thing he could to save himself. So many things I’d want to tell him. He can be a role-model for not taking it lying down. This young man took one for the team. I hope he is not abandoned but rather fully supported and appreciated.

  10. One has to wonder how many body guards does the judge have . Oh that right all the cops there . Thanks galen you made a good point people need to bug the shit out of that judge
