HONG KONG — The International Monetary Fund on Monday designated the Chinese renminbi as one of the world’s elite currencies, a major milestone that underscores the country’s rising financial and economic heft.
The decision will help pave the way for broader use of the renminbi in trade and finance, securing China’s standing as a global economic power. Not only has Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke been charged with first-degree murder in the October 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, but according to grand jury testimony of a Burger King restaurant manager, Chicago police also erased a surveillance video to try and cover the shooting up.
Jay Darshane, manager at a Burger King located near where McDonald was shot, testified that Chicago police officers showed up to his restaurant shortly after the shooting, asking him to see his surveillance footage. After they left, there was a curious and unexplained 86-minute gap in the footage that just so happens to cover the exact time of the shooting. Boston, MA — A violent cop, who beat an innocent man in front of fellow officers, and then charged him with assault, pleaded guilty to battery last week, but only after video of the incident surfaced.
Officer Felix Rivera, Jr. 34, of the Chelsea police department, responded, along with several officers, to a call about a man with a gun on September 26, 2014. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) gave the yuan a vote of confidence on Monday by including the Chinese currency in its Special Drawing Rights (SDR) uniting the US dollar, euro, British pound and the Japanese yen.
Adding the yuan as a reserve currency will allow central banks to buy more of the Chinese currency, and boost investment in the Chinese stock market. The World Bank on Monday launched a $500 million (333 million pounds) market-based scheme designed to help developing countries pay for emission reductions and combat climate change.
Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland have jointly pledged an initial $250 million to get the so-called Transformative Carbon Asset Facility (TCAF) up and running next year, while the bank hopes further contributions will take the eventual total to $500 mln. Two senior U.S. senators called on Sunday for Washington to nearly triple military force levels in Iraq to 10,000 and send an equal number of troops to Syria as part of a multinational ground force to counter Islamic State in both countries.
Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticized President Barack Obama’s incremental Islamic State strategy, which relies on air strikes and modest support to local ground forces in Iraq and Syria, and said the need for greater U.S. involvement was underlined by this month’s Paris attacks. A San Francisco police officer whose good-looks earned him a bevy of admirers and the nickname “Hot Cop of Castro” was arrested early Sunday for allegedly driving into two pedestrians and fleeing the scene, authorities said.

Several years into the Syrian Civil War, in which the Syrian military has been fighting almost non-stop against ISIS, the French Foreign Ministry today announced that the Syrian military “could be used” to fight ISIS, but only if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is first removed from office.
Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius insisting that the eventual defeat of ISIS would require ground troops, and sought to reassure people that the French military wouldn’t be sending its own ground troops, suggesting that the Syrian military could substitute for that. A suspected burglar tried to enter a house in California through its chimney, getting trapped inside it for a day. He died when the homeowner returned and lit fire, unaware that there had been a person inside.
Fresno County Sheriff deputies received a call at around 3:00pm on Saturday from a man who reported that he had lit fire in his fireplace and then heard screams from the chimney, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said on its official website. Storms in the US Midwest have claimed at least 14 lives as temperatures plunged below freezing point over the holiday weekend. Tens of thousands of homes have been left without electricity, while driving conditions are treacherous due to icy roads.
A wintry storm system that has been moving through parts of the Great Plains and the Midwest since Thursday has brought extremely cold weather to the region. JERUSALEM (AP) — A Jerusalem court on Monday convicted two Israeli youths in the grisly killing of a 16-year-old Palestinian boy whose slaying was part of a chain of events that led to last year’s Gaza war.
The court delayed the verdict for the third and chief suspect in the case due to a last-minute insanity plea, sparking claims that Israel is too lenient with Jewish assailants. The court found the two Israeli minors guilty of killing Mohammed Abu Khdeir, who was kidnapped, beaten unconscious and then burned alive in July 2014.
