While President Donald Trump on Thursday urged the preservation of “our beautiful statues and monuments” honoring Confederates, Sen. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A white van jumped the sidewalk Thursday in Barcelona’s historic Las Ramblas district, injuring several people as it plowed into a summer crowd of tourists and residents, police said. The El Pais newspaper said police were treating the crash as a terror attack.

DURHAM – A vandal or vandals defaced the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee near the entrance of Duke Chapel.

The incident happened sometime overnight, Duke University spokesman Keith Lawrence said, adding that the campus police are investigating.

Japan wants to bolster its missile defense with the US Aegis Ashore system in light of North Korean threats, local media reported. Tokyo also plans to increase its number of Aegis-equipped destroyers.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — An Australian senator provoked an angry backlash from lawmakers by wearing a burqa in Parliament on Thursday as part of her campaign for a national ban on Islamic face covers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and Japanese defense chiefs and top diplomats were meeting in Washington Thursday to discuss North Korea amid mixed messages from the Trump administration on how to deal with the nuclear and missile threat.

Japan is a key U.S. ally and potential target of North Korean aggression. Shortly after President Trump posted a link for tickets to a rally in Phoenix, the city’s mayor issued a statement asking the president not to come, saying, “our nation is still healing from the tragic events in Charlottesville.”

Mayor Greg Stanton continued, “If President Trump is coming to Phoenix to announce a pardon for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, then it will be clear that his true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide our nation.”

The rally has been confirmed by Donald Trump’s campaign and will take place on August 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The announcement of the rally in Phoenix came after news of a possible visit were reported last Friday. WEB Notes: Here we go folks, silencing free speech. Many people would say, ‘hey they are racists we do not want to hear that’. Free speech is free speech. If you do not want to listen to a fool walk away or close your browser window. It is that simple. Banning speech you do not like is not the answer, it closes the door to other thoughts and silences our mind and moves us in a direction of defined thought. One day they will ban Christian’s who call Satan the anti-Christ. Those banned Christians will be right in their condemnation, but the world will not realize it. This is all a stepping stone for that event. Stay alert and awake, we have some time yet, but these are examples for us of what many of us will face during that time…

Removing monuments from the Civil War to erase history is a mistake.

This won’t be a popular opinion, and I’m okay with that. Because for now, we still have freedom of speech.

While I can understand why some people would strongly disagree , I’d like to respectfully offer a different perspective. My opinion that those monuments should be left alone isn’t because I support the horrible things that have been done in our history. Don Hall and his girlfriend were sitting in their living room earlier this year when they noticed police lights flashing outside the couple’s upstate New York home.

When the 70-year-old Army veteran greeted Oneida County sheriff’s deputies he was given a document saying that Hall had to hand over his six guns – four long guns and two pistols — to law enforcement because he had been deemed “mentally defective.”

Shocked, Hall told the police he had no history of mental issues.
