DENVER — A video posted to Facebook by a Denver mother has gone viral after she shamed her 13-year-old daughter for posing as a 19-year-old and posting suggestive photos.
Val Starks posted the video Sunday and it has been viewed more than 9 million times and shared nearly 300,000 times.
“You’re 13,” Starks said to the girl. “So why does your Facebook page say that your 19? Are you 19?” Starks said in the five-minute, 41-second video.
The girl answers “No.”
“No. You’re 13,” Starks said. “You’ve got a Facebook page and you’re on there with your bra on, right? Is that what you do?”
The girl answers “No” and begins to cry.
“Don’t cry now,” Starks said. “You wasn’t crying when you was posting pictures on Facebook, was you? In a bra? Some little girl in some lace panties that you know you don’t own. You still wear panties that say Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.”
The video quickly took off on Facebook, and Starks said she was overwhelmed by the support and feedback.

It truly takes a village to raise a child. I only set out to touch one mother or father or to trigger a thought of what their child might be doing but I thank u Father GOD THAT U USED A SINNER LIKE ME TO SPREAD AWARENESS TO THE WORLD ABOUT THE DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES OF SOCIAL MEDIA. Starks posted a second video Monday thanking everyone after she topped out at 5,000 friends on the social media site.
“I just wanted to say the word of the day is overwhelmed,” Starks said. “I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude.”
There has been some criticism of Starks that she went too far in shaming her daughter.
To which Starks responded: “I am her mother before anything. I am not her friend. I am not here to let her do whatever she wants. My job is to raise her — sometimes that takes a little bit of tough love.”
