Detroit Police Commander arrested for drunk driving on Detroit’s east side

Fox 2

 – A Detroit Police Commander from the 6th precinct was arrested early Saturday morning for drunk driving and causing an accident.

Police say Cmdr. Johnny Thomas was driving under the influence when he smashed into a stopped car at Mack and St. Antoine around 12:30 a.m.

The driver of the stopped vehicle was taken to the hospital where he was later released. There was another car other car involved but no one else was hurt.

“It’s embarrassing I guess, you’re supposed to be the police commander there is a higher standard to operate by, Andrew Hinton said.

Andrew Hinton lives right by the scene of the crash.

He knew heard the crash but didn’t realize a Detroit Police Commander allegedly caused it.

A warrant package has been submitted to the WCPO for review and Thomas has been placed on restricted duty until the investigation is complete according to Chief James Craig.

Police say the actions of Thomas are certainly disappointing, but it is not a reflection of the men and women who put their lives on the line and serve heroically every day.
