Dueling gun rallies at the State Capitol

A broken-down bus didn’t stop the No More Names bus tour and its anti-gun violence message from coming to the Georgia State Capitol.

Those affected by gun violence and supporters of tougher gun laws came to Atlanta as part of the 25 state, 100 day bus tour started by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The news conference began and ended with names being read of those killed by gun violence.

“There will be more deaths on the streets of America until we make some changes,” says Alice Johnson, with Georgians for Gun Safety.

Among other things, the group is calling for stricter laws on background checks.

Meantime, gun rights supporters held their own counter demonstration on the sidewalk in front of the Capitol.

“The fact that one in 12 names on that bus were people who were shot by either policemen in commission of a crime or an armed citizen in the commission of the crime, says they have some work to do to clean up that list,” says Jerry Henry with GeorgiaCarry.org.  “We just don’t think it’s right that somebody should spend the money that Mayor Bloomberg spends to come down here to try to rob us of our rights.”

He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish he thinks the country currently has reasonable background checks.

At times, rally attenders and counter demonstrators tried to out-shout one another, but the day ended peacefully.

    Yep, and that’s an understatement.
