The counter-culture group “Rainbow Family” has gathered illegally in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest, site of a federal standoff with a constitutionalist group more than a year ago that resulted in the death of one of it members and seven more being arrested.
The Associated Press reported 600 members of the Rainbow group are already camped near Flagtail Meadow in the park, but Malheur National Forest officials are expecting between 10,000-30,000 to arrive by July 4.
“The group refused to sign a special use permit, required for groups of more than 75. The group has noted that it claims no leader, and consequently there is no one to sign such permits. The Malhuer Forest Service said it will require operating conditions that users must abide by,” according to the AP.
The official gathering will last from July 1-7.
Ryan Nehl, deputy Forest Service supervisor on the Malheur, said the Forest Service will not attempt to stop the gathering.
“It’s a risk-based decision,” he said. “To try and kick them off the land would present a danger to employees and the public.”
The event is put on by the Rainbow Family of Living Light, “a loosely-organized group that annually picks a spot for its gathering and invites like-minded people to attend for multiple days of music, camping, dancing and communal hanging out,” the Capital Press reported. The gatherings have been held since the 1970s.
The federal government took a much more aggressive approach in January 2016 when the group Citizens for Constitutional Freedom set up camp at the refuge to protest the federal government’s control over lands the organization said rightly belong to the states or to the people.
One of the group’s chief concerns was the ability of ranchers to graze cattle on federally controlled lands, which the feds allow, but restrict for the stated purpose of preventing overgrazing.
Most of the dozens who participated in the protest were armed. Ammon Bundy, one of the group’s leaders, explained why to CBS News.
Looks like all you have to do is walk around completely unarmed and say the word “rainbow” a lot and your automatically in. Don’t even need a password.
“Hey, you! What’s the password?”
“Queerbait sandwich!”

Don’t think about freedom or keeping and bearing arms because those are thought crimes.
for what it’s worth….
rainbow people are only there for a few weeks. they do this in a different place every year. an annual gathering if you will. they are harassed mercilessly by the dudes with badges. they’re not trying to take over anything. just use public land which they have the right to like any other family.
i’ve known a few of the rainbow folks and most of them were nice, and mostly normal. i met one guy and his wife who have been going to these for 30 plus years.

Sure, they have a right to gather on their dime, but not with such disparity.

First, it’s ‘leftist’, and second, the feds aren’t allowing it, but they’re kinda helpless to stop it. These people do this every year, in a new spot, regardless of how anyone else feels about it. They pay no fees, claim to have no leadership, and insist they have ‘the right’, much like the Bundy Bunch did, but without guns. But…there is still violence. And then there is the environmental damage. There are drugs, alcohol, thefts, rapes, etc, every year. The Drainbows, as we call them, deny, deny, deny. They claim to leave the places better than before, which is an outright lie. They won’t ‘control’ their people, so the taxpayers get to pay the state/county to do so. Like the Bundy’s, they cost the taxpayers in several ways. Every year, the costs soar to nearly $1million dollars to police and clean up, despite their claims they clean up. They ignore environmental impact, such as their dogs (many get left behind every year) chasing off wildlife, causing the wildlife great stress, which may also affect reproduction. They dig slit trenches near waterways, which can lead to fecal coliform and contamination of ground water. They trample and compact the earth, which leave the ground unable to regenerate for many years, if ever. They still leave a lot of garbage, as stated by eyewitnesses in every locality, every year. They trespass private property, they steal from locals, they panhandle. They have to set up ‘pop-up courts’ to immediately deal with the tickets handed out, or, the Drainbows will skip town, never returning for a court date, because most of the time, they don’t give their real name, never show ID.
No, the feds are not ‘allowing’ it, but, like with the Bundy’s, it’s hard for them to stop it. The difference is: their weapons are their numbers, not actual guns in the faces of feds.
