WATERTOWN (AP) — The 26th and final playground built in memory of the Newtown school shooting victims has opened in Connecticut.
Volunteers and relatives of Dawn Hochsprung gathered in Watertown on Sunday to dedicate the playground in her honor. Hochsprung was the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, where she, 20 first graders and five other educators were shot to death in December 2012.
There are now playgrounds for each of the 26 victims. They were built under The Sandy Ground Project/Where Angels Play, which constructed them in areas of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey affected by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Work began Tuesday, September 30, to construct the playground at Watertown’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. Hochsprung died trying to save her students during the Sandy Hook school shootings.
The playground in memory of Hochsprung has particular significance to Watertown. William Lavin, the founder of Where Angels Play, said Hochsprung’s four young grandchildren and one of her daughters live in Watertown. It also will be the closest playground to Newtown, giving residents there a place to come and celebrate their loved ones.
Organizers said Sunday’s ribbon cutting was a celebration of Hochsprung’s life, and not meant to be a sad event.
Gee…I hope they didn’t setup a swing set on that new playground. It could be even more dangerous than Adam Lanza. 😉
