FOX LAKE – Police investigating the shooting death of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz are hopeful that a private resident’s video gives them the break they need to help identify the three suspects still at large.
Investigators have turned the video over to the Department of Homeland Security because it has the equipment necessary to retrieve and view it, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said at a Thursday afternoon news conference.
He gave out few details, citing the ongoing investigation into Tuesday morning’s fatal shooting, but said a resident came forward last night and described some of what was on the tape.
“We tried to watch it last night, but we didn’t have the technology,” Filenko said.
Filenko said investigators believe the probability is high that the three male suspects, two white and one black, are still in the area.
On top of the potential video evidence, Filenko said investigators will receive forensic results from the crime scene either tonight or early Friday.
“I believe we’re making some progress, some significant progress today,” Filenko said.
Filenko said that he now has two detectives sifting through the large number of leads that are continuing to arrive.
Filenko also said police have recovered the gun used in Gliniewicz’s death. He again declined to answer questions about whether the weapon belonged to Gliniewicz.
Gliniewicz, a 30-year police veteran, was shot and killed while investigating three suspicious men near Route 12 and Sayton Road. The beloved officer, known throughout the community as “G.I. Joe,” was a month away from retirement, and left behind a wife and four sons.
Filenko and Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli briefly touched on the overnight response to an alleged sighting of the suspects that turned out to be falsely made by a Vernon Hills nanny who wanted attention from the family for whom she works. The five-hour search involved more than 140 police officers, 11 dogs and three aircraft.
The nanny, Kristin Kiefer, faces felony and misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges, and is being held in Lake County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
Filenko praised the work of the officers involved in the investigation, and said it has been difficult getting them to go home and get rest.
“They want to be here. They want to be here, 24 hours a day, until this is resolved,” Filenko said.
The funeral for Gliniewicz is tentatively scheduled for Monday, and was still being arranged at the time of the news conference.

Why are they so surprised by this? It’s a no-brainer for me.

WTF were you trying to watch it on?! You’ve bilked the populace incessantly while purchasing all manner of hi-tech gadgets and weaponry with public funds and THAT’S your reason? Maybe it’s on VHS?
