Idaho Bill to End Permit Requirement for Concealed Weapons Introduced

BOISE — A new bill introduced in the Statehouse would allow Idaho residents to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

But not everyone is on board.

No permit needed to carry concealed weapons. That’s the proposal. A handful of states have similar laws already on the books.

Gun control advocates say the new laws are part of a long-range strategy to weaken gun laws across the country, but supporters say armed, law-abiding citizens prevent crime.

The House State Affairs Committee voted Thursday to introduce the bill, dubbed the “Constitutional Carry” bill. It passed along party lines — with four Democrats voting no.

The Idaho Second Amendment Alliance has been pushing for the bill for several years. They say the passage of a Constitutional Carry bill would restore to Idaho citizens what was already rightfully theirs — that is the right to defend yourself — and no government entity has the authority to require you to get a permit to do so.

But doing away with permits for concealed weapons concerns those opposed to the bill. Democratic Rep. Elaine Smith from Pocatello raised concern that the bill did not require any formal training to carry a weapon.

Greg Pruett with Idaho Second Amendment Alliance responded that Idaho residents are generally very responsible with their guns.

The bill is in the beginning stage of the legislative process. Lawmakers will consider the bill at a full hearing in the coming weeks.

    Formal training?

Parents teach their kids. That’s all the ‘formal’ you need.
