The National Academy of Sciences report showing that 80 percent of American men and 70 percent of American women don’t get the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of magnesium from their diets and whatever supplements they are taking.
Dubbed the multi-tasking mineral, magnesium is a critical but often overlooked nutrient for the prevention of asthma, diabetes, heart disease, insomnia, migraines, osteoporosis, and more.
That’s not surprising since magnesium plays a key role in over 325 enzyme reactions in the body-from energy production to cholesterol control.
Dr. Dean has studied and written about magnesium for about 15 years. In January, 2003, she published the first edition of The Magnesium Miracle, and she’s currently working on the third edition of this book.
“What I want to convey today is the importance of magnesium, how you can get it, how you can know how much you require in your body, and the incredible benefits from using this simple mineral,” she says.
Why Not Magnesium?
From The Magnesium Miracle, here are the top 22 conditions that may be caused by magnesium deficiency. Each one can be treated with magnesium supplementation.
• Anxiety and panic attacks.
• Asthma.
• Blood clots.
• Bowel disease induced by constipation.
• Cystitis and bladder spasms.
• Depression.
• Diabetes.
• Fatigue.
• Heart disease.
• Hypertension.
• Hypoglycemia.
• Insomnia.
• Kidney stones.
• Migraine.
• Musculoskeletal conditions including fibrositis; fibromyalgia; muscle spasms; eye twitches; cramps; and chronic neck and back pain.
• Nerve problems including migraines; muscle contractions; gastrointestinal spasms; calf, foot and toe cramps; vertigo; and confusion.
• Premenstrual Syndrome; dysmenorrhea; infertility; premature contractions; preeclampsia; and eclampsia in pregnancy.
• Osteoporosis.
• Raynaud’s syndrome.
• Sudden infant death syndrome.
• Tooth decay.
• Toxicity.
Lack Of Magnesium in the Diet
Cooking and processing depletes magnesium, even from those foods high in magnesium. Alcohol, coffee, sugar, and high protein in the diet are also responsible for diminished magnesium levels in the body.
Magnesium is found in seaweed, deep green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate.
Lack of Magnesium on the Farm
Even before we start destroying magnesium in the kitchen, we’ve depleted magnesium in the soil. Magnesium is not a component of modern-day fertilizers. When plants have used up all the magnesium in the soil, unless it’s replaced, there is none in the next crop.
In her book, The Magnesium Miracle, Dr. Dean lists 100 factors that will help you decide whether or not you might be deficient. You can also follow the instructions in her blog post, “Gauging Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms,” which will give you a checklist to go through every few weeks. This will help you gauge how much magnesium you need in order to take away your deficiency symptoms.

Thanks Paul this is very good information. I knew at lot of this info but still I found this article and video to be very informative. One thing I saw about magnesium deficiency that I did not know was Raynaud’s Syndrome. I have had this problem for 4 years now. That’s when the fingers and toes go white from lack of circulation on chilly and cold days. Even though I live in TX I’m having those issues right now because the mornings are now very chilly. I was informed that there isn’t a cure and to stay out of cold weather as much as possible. I love to bundle up and walk on cold days but I can’t anymore because of this disease cutting off the circulation to my fingers and toes. I’m going to look into finding ways to get more magnesium for sure now. Thanks again Paul! The magnesium might not cure this condition but it might help just the same.
CatFon – the best way to get mg is via transdermal application (on the skin). You can use oil or lotion – I like the lotion as it feels better. The best supplier is Ancient Minerals – 8 oz bottle of lotion is about $18-20 but well worth it. That company gets mg from deep mines in Europe. Other companies (in the US) tend to get mg from the Salt Lake – but that lake is contaminated with mercury.
Taking supplements is bad, because the supplements (mg oxide is the most common) are not readily absorbed by the body. Take it only if you are constipated, if you know what I mean.
Dot
p.s., yes, nice job, Paul.
Hi Dot thanks for this information. I’m going to have to look into this! Although I have been told there is no cure for Raynaud’s Syndrome I’m willing to give that lotion a try. It just might help. What has always scared me about Raynauld’s Syndrome is that if the blood supply is cut of in the fingers and toes for too long then dry gangrene becomes a possibility. That is something to be concerned about for sure but I can’t be a prisoner in my home all winter long (I would go crazy). It can take about 20 minutes to warm my fingers and toes back to where they are pink again. While this isn’t a life treating situation it’s still very troublesome. Many thanks again Dot, your information is very much appreciated! 🙂
good – glad to help. Let me know if you have trouble finding it. There are different venders on amazon, and the price seems to fluctuate. there is a version called “ultra” but it’s not worth the extra cost, in my opinion. Please also – in a month or so – say whether or not it helped! Lots of folks take it for arthritis, too. Feels good right before bed – mg helps you relax your muscles. -Dot
Hi Dot and Happy Halloween! I did go to the local natural health care store today but they did not have the kind magnesium that you recommended. I did see that stuff from the Salt Lake but steered clear of it because of it being contaminated with mercury. I bought some pills so I can start taking something. I might try to find it on Amazon. I couldn’t remember what all you said so just went ahead and settled for the pills. Thanks for all your help, I’ll keep you posted! 🙂
Hi CatFon,
Italian Clicker (down below) has it right – use mg from the Zechstein seabed (in Europe). The oil I hate, but that is a personal preference. I get Ancient Minerals mg lotion from Amazon, as mentioned. If you have any cuts on your skin, DO NOT put mineral oil or lotion on, as it will sting.
Good luck, and feel better soon,
Dot
Hey CatFon I hope this information helps. I try to send things in that can keep our brothers and sisters in good health. We have a war to fight, and I want us to win in good health.
“That’s not surprising since magnesium plays a key role in over 325 enzyme reactions in the body-from energy production to cholesterol control.”
One of THE most essential minerals.
I take it every day, in combination with coral calcium.
In what form do you take it? Just curious. -Dot
I meant that literally, Dot. The coral calcium I buy (same company I get my MSM & vitamins from) also has magnesium in it as well. Capsule form.
Okay, well, whatever works for you. Mark Circus, in his book on mg, says that having too much calcium in relation to mg is a problem, and that most of us get enough calcium from dietary sources.
I wish I knew the real deal, or could access a way of testing for mineral/vitamin deficiencies. Then one could just try various sources of the needed nutrients, then get tested again and again until levels rise sufficiently.
-Dot
The magnesium supplement I take is in a combined form of Citrate, Taurinate, Malate, Glycinate, and Succinate. I love it! I cannot tell you how much better I feel. The bowel tract works much better, I feel more calm, I sleep better and I no longer have heart palpitations.
I gave the “The Magnesium Miracle” book to my daughter as she was recovering from a Deep Vein Thrombosis that developed in her leg.
Even before she was weaned off of her blood thinner, she started taking the same Magnesium I take. There are no contraindications between Magnesium and blood thinners by the way. However, my daughter DID tell her doctor she was taking Magnesium so her blood thinner could be adjusted.
I personally wrote to the Dr. who wrote “The Magnesium Miracle” and she confirmed there are no contraindications between Magnesium and blood thinners.

Hey Cathleen. I take solgar chilated magnesium as magnesium glyconate chelate, magnesium oxide. , and have had favorable results. Not dead tired all the time any more. Also O.A, pain is less, and Impinged nerve pain is less. Not a miracle but helps. I have also been able to discontinue diltiazem (calcium channel re-uptake inhibitor) that i took for incomplete right hand bundle branch block. Very few heart flips now. 😎
Awesome Paul! That’s great news!
