Man Detained In Psychiatric Ward For Giving Out Hundreds Of Dollars To Strangers

Officials in Halifax, Canada, have detained a man because he had been giving away money to strangers. Richard Wright had been vacationing in the city and decided to spend some of his time giving away various amounts of money to strangers on the street. When they would thank him, he would often tell them to instead “thank God,” and his daughter Chelsey claims that he was simply attempting to do good for the world.

One women who was a recipient of the Wright’s act of kindness, named Cathy, called his act a blessing, one that was able to help her get by until the end of the month. Cathy is on disability and had been running low on money for rent and food for the month. Wright surprisingly gave her $50, which she said she used to buy groceries with. Bill MacNamara and June Bond were having coffee on their porch early in the morning when Wright pulled up in front of their home, he walked up to them and handed them over $100

Following the detainment of her father, Chelsey took to Facebook to defend him and insist that the accusations insinuating that her father has some mental impairment are falsely ludicrous. She affirmed that she strongly believes he does not suffer from any mental issues. Mental health authorities have since detained and admitted him at a local psychiatric ward in Halifax.

It is also claimed that Wright would talk the recipients of his charitable acts about Nikola Tesla and the suppression of his research on free energy. A Facebook group has since been established by numerous members in support of Wright, named #OpFreeRichardWright

In a recent open letter from Wright, he states that he was arrested under the Mental Health Act,

“I was then taken to the QEH for examination and placed in a small black concrete room with a thick steel door and a small window. Inside the room was a roof mounted camera and a stretcher. I was left in this cell like room for almost 8 hours and fed only two pieces of white bread. I was questioned by five different doctors and nurses over this period of time.” – Wright claims.

And it gets worse, it seems Wright may not be the only one who has suffered numerous violations for unjustified reasons,

“Upon realizing all of the injustices done to me and that none of the proper procedures were followed I began to ask some of the other patients and I was amazed at the amount of abuse to peoples rights going on here. I told Dr. beck that I was to speak with lawyer and start a lawsuit on behalf of all patients, now and former. Shortly after making a statement I have been confined to my room and only allowed out at 1/2 hour periods of time. Some of the other inmates were told also not to speak or they would lose their privileges. BTW I have none. I am not permitted to participate in any group activities or allowed outside at all.” – said Wright.

Following his statements made about the ill treatment and more, Wright says that a consideration has been added, and is now to be made at the review board hearing on Friday. The additional consideration is whether or not Mr. Wright is capable of managing his own affairs and to implement a certificate of incapacity to make his own choices and force him to be medicated with psychiatric drugs. Dr. Beck also told Wright that she is planning to have his drivers license suspended and he also faces the possibility of losing custody of his children.

The incident contributes to a growing trend in an effort to criminalize charitable acts. We have seen many attacks on and arrests of the homeless, and other individuals who have tried to engage in voluntary charity and civil exchange. Why is voluntary charity now considered a mental impairment?

Wright isn’t the first one to be wrongfully victimized, and it isn’t uncommon for those detained in mental health facilities, to suffer from labeling and dehumanization that saturates the psychiatric institutions. Previous research also indicates (the Rosenhahn experiments, where psychiatrists went to hospitals where they were not known, pretended to hear an inocuous voice saying something like “beep,” and were subsequently all kept until agreeing to take psychotropic medication) that medical health professionals are often not be able to accurately distinguish the sane from the insane in psychiatric hospitals. Mr. Wright has recently been let out and he has stated that he isn’t going to pursue any legal action over the incident.

Mental illness is a real issue, and something that should in many ways be dealt with on an individual basis instead of through standardized clinical means. Wright was clearly within his rights, and reasonably within his sanity in his effort to personally redistribute some of his wealth while attracting attention to issues he found important. Far from being insane, personally partaking in helping others is a wide-reaching and culturally important action.

  1. I certainly do not see this as a mental disorder. I wish I could do the same.
It just feels good. This is no different than people donating monies
to various hardship situations on the net. The folks he gave money to were
    in need.

  2. Those who participate in this attack upon this mans LIBERTY should be dragged out and shot in front of the rest about to be shot. As each is dying a group of gulag prisoners should be peeing in the filths face. It would be hoped they would die from drowning in piss rather than the gun shot wound but I really don’t care as long as it is painful. These rotten SOCIALIST SWINE need to die. Not be talked to. They need to die. Enough of this unjust taking of our time. They cannot give it back once stolen. Buy more ammo ASAP. War is coming. (And when it starts drink LOTS of coffee, we’re going to need a lot of piss) Liberty1775 and death to the tyrant.
