Marijuana Might Soon Be Certified Kosher

Medicinal and even recreational marijuana has become available in several states over the last year. Now, a company from Colorado, where weed is legalized, is working with rabbis from New York to create a certified Kosher edible, that can be supplied to patients who follow strict dietary laws.

Next year in New York, it is looking like medicinal marijuana will be legalized under the Compassionate Care Act signed by Governor Cuomo. This would be a great way to cater to a whole new demographic of people who need medicinal marijuana, but aren’t able to have it because it simply isn’t Kosher.

The Rabbi who would be in charge of the Kosher supervision of the product, Rabbi Moshe Elefant, spoke to representatives from the Colorado company. He would help to make sure the ingredients used in the making of edibles are Kosher. Although marijuana itself is not an issue, if it is made with the wrong stuff, it wouldn’t be accessible by Jews following Kashrut.

Rabbi Moshe Elefant said that he has, “no personal experience with marijuana”, but believes that the whole ordeal is fascinating nonetheless.

Of course, this could lead to some controversy in the Jewish world, with some people believing marijuana is bad for your health, while others believe it’s been used by rabbis since historical times.

As long as the marijuana is Kosher and the patient is a candidate for medicinal marijuana, the debate shouldn’t stretch too far. Just make sure not to burn on Shabbat!

  1. Well, that didn’t take em long to get their hooks into that angle. Still waiting on kosher pork but they’re probably working on it.

  2. $$$ Green ‘gold’. $$$

WhereEVER there’s money to be made (or stolen), the jews will be right there at the trough.
