Michael Bloomberg backs Bill Daley in primary

Politico – by TAL KOPAN

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is jumping into the Illinois governor’s race, endorsing Bill Daley in the Democratic primary and touting the former White House chief of staff’s support for gun control.

In a video released Tuesday, Bloomberg says his friend Daley is “a strong leader who tells it like it is and gets things done.”

“Why is the New York Mayor talking to you about the next governor of Illinois? Because I feel strongly that Bill Daley is uniquely qualified to lead Illinois in these challenging times,” Bloomberg says in the video.

Listing Daley’s résumé as the son and brother of two Chicago mayors, President Bill Clinton’s secretary of commerce and President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Bloomberg highlights Daley’s stance on budgets, education, jobs, climate and, of course, gun control.

The leader of the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns says that Daley will support “common-sense” gun control measures like background checks and banning high-capacity ammunition magazines while supporting local communities’ rights to determine gun regulations.

Bloomberg is no stranger to Illinois politics: His super PAC spent more than $2 million in this winter’s race for former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s South Side Chicago congressional district, attacking candidate Debbie Halvorson’s support for gun rights. Bloomberg-backed candidate Robin Kelly won the election.

Meanwhile Tuesday, incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who Daley is challenging in the primary, is expected to use his amendatory veto power to rewrite concealed-carry legislation in Illinois, likely adding stronger restrictions, according to the Chicago Tribune.

  1. Having been born and raised in Illinois, and lived there until 1999, I’m guessing there are preparations being made for Daley’s prison cell right there on Governor’s Row. Just another in a long line of criminals from Chicago. Seems that most governors from Illinois have their retirement homes in prison!

  2. Bloominidiot just can’t seem to keep his big ‘jew’ nose out of ANYBODY else’s business, can he?
