The January 2017 issue of National Geographic will be a historic one: it is the publication’s first issue to feature a transgender person on the cover.
Sitting pretty on the magazine’s cover is 9-year-old Avery Jackson, a transgender girl from Kansas City. “Gender Revolution” is displayed in large type across the cover. The magazine told Attn: Avery is the first ever transgender person to be featured on the magazine’s front page.

Avery is the perfect choice for this historic milestone. She’s representative of the growing visibility of transgender people, and she drives the point home that being transgender isn’t a choice, but just something you are. In a quote that accompanies Avery’s picture on the cover, Avery says “the best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy.”
Avery’s mom confirmed the cover on Twitter.
“The one thing that I impart upon my daughter is very simple: Love yourself and show love to others,” Tim Jackson wrote in the Times. “That is exactly what I intend to do. I love my daughter for who she is without preconditions, and I promise to help nurture her into a becoming a happy, healthy and productive member of society. After all, isn’t that our job as parents?”
Since we know acceptance from family and community reduces the risk of depression and attempted suicide in transgender people, this National Geographic cover is huge. The more people see transgender people and realize that they are everywhere, living their lives just like everyone else, the more acceptance will hopefully come. Right now, violence against transgender people is at an all time high in the United States, so this cover couldn’t have come at a better time. We desperately need the world to realize that transgender people are people before anything else. Hopefully seeing Avery and the love her family has for her will help that along.

Transgenderism is a mental illness. With rare exceptions, sex is determined by chomosomes in a very simple way: XY = male, and XX = female. Someone who thinks he or she is really a member of the opposite sex is as delusional as someone who believes he’s a squirrel, dog, or cat.
Now, if an adult is suffering from such a delusion or wants to harbor it, that’s his or her business. But that doesn’t obligate me or anyone else to play along or to suppress any feelings of amusement or disgust that might arise when we’re confronted with these people.
The real problem arises when disturbed children are allowed to indulge in this sort of mental illness rather than being given the psychiatric help they need. Allowing a child to become a tranny is a serious form of child abuse in my book, whether the child knows it or not. This is especially so if there is any sort of permanent body modification through surgery or hormones.
“Avery’s story” was NOT the story of a 9 year-old, boy or girl, but it was scripted for him by adults, and he learned it from them.
He likes climbing trees, being a ninja, and archery, just as you might expect from any other boy, but at nine years old, no child has their gender worked out, because it’s something that’s just not important at that age.
If you don’t want to force a male or female gender identity on a child, why would you want to force a transgender identity on him?
I think the parents are trying to show the world how “progressive” and “enlightened” they are by having a transgender child, but they too should stay out of his or her sex life, and let him or her work that out for themselves when they reach adulthood. Teaching the kid that he’s “transgender” (he didn’t write that story himself) borders on child abuse in my opinion, because you’re also teaching him that there’s no normal place for him in society, but instead that he’s a circus freak that the world doesn’t understand.
Maybe what you have is a slightly effeminate son, but a son nonetheless, who fits in with the rest of the population for the most part, even if he’s not as manly as stereotypes told you he should be, in which case it’s the parents who are obsessed with gender roles more than the rest of society is.
There have always been Tom-boys and sissies in this world, but the media has defined gender roles for the parents (taught them stereotypes), and as a result, it is they who are forcing a “transgender” non-identity on an otherwise normal kid.
