New father fatally shot during infant’s homecoming celebration

Officials in Panama City say a new father is dead after a neighbor accidentally fired a gun into the family’s home during a gathering to celebrate the infant’s homecoming.

The News Herald of Panama City reports that 33-year-old Steven Justin Ayers died Tuesday night after the stray bullet struck his head.  

According to arrest reports, Ayers’ neighbor was on his porch and picked up a loaded 9mm pistol. The neighbor told authorities that he accidentally discharged the pistol. The man was arrested and charged with manslaughter and with being felon in possession of a firearm. He had a previous felony conviction for carrying a concealed firearm.

Ayers was a musician who played venues throughout the Panhandle. He also taught guitar lessons.

  1. So… IF this really happened, why hasn’t the perp been named?

    This supposedly happened yesterday and the perp’s name and mug shot still have not been released? Yeah, right.

    1. Okay, thanks Angel. It is odd how my search turned up diddly at the time (gremlins?).

      I did find addresses for both Ayers and Shisler; they lived about 4/5 of a mile apart as the crow flies, so that bullet traveled a long ways and through or over a lot of obstacles, including what looks like sewage lift station.
