Misguided Children – by Faye Higbee
New York: In a out-right bizarre twist, the Grand Island Senior High School Administration has decided to deny that Shane Kinney was suspended or even disciplined for the NRA T-Shirt that reportedly violated their dress code. Now he is being called “insubordinate” for wearing the shirt, and the school has started to harass him.
This is the shirt Shane wore underneath a sweatshirt. At first they said this t-shirt was ok, but abruptly that changed.
Misguided Children reported the situation on March 11 in which Shane was given a one day in-school suspension for wearing a t-shirt that had an NRA logo and guns, as well as a pro-second amendment banner. The news has now hit the national scene as Fox News and the Washington Times reported the situation today.
Vice Principal Michael Lauria stated the following when asked by Fox News:
“On Friday March 7th, 2014 prior to the start of school, Shane was seen wearing a sweatshirt with the logo of a firearm. Shane was asked to remove the shirt and turn it inside out, or place tape over the logo. Shane was also previously asked not to wear the shirt to school. Shane did not listen to the administrator and was later seen wearing a T-shirt with rifles displayed on the back… Shane’s actions are insubordinate and in violation of the GICSD Code of Conduct.”
The school denied that he was ever disciplined for the shirt. In a statement released by the Superintendent,
“March 11, 2014:
On behalf of the District, I am responding to your inquiry about rumors of purported recent discipline of a student in the Grand Island Central School District. We may not disclose the details of any particular student’s discipline. However, in this case there is no truth to the rumor of a student disciplined for wearing a shirt expressing a position on the NRA or gun control.
Students and parents are fully aware of recent incidents of violence in schools which have resulted in fear and concern about student safety and well-being in our schools. Our primary focus in the Grand Island Central School District is the safety and welfare of our students and our staff.
By law, schools are to be “gun free” and there are mandatory disciplinary penalties for violating those laws. The prevention of violence in schools is of concern to everyone.
We are fully aware of the importance of the Second Amendment and our students’ rights to free speech. We have policies in place that comply with the Constitution and the law. Such disciplinary policies address conduct such as disruption of education, safety issues, insubordination, and welfare of our students. Any violations are handled in accordance with our dress code and policies which can be found on our website at www.k12.ginet.org.

That’s interesting- both the Vice Principal and the Superintendent go on about all the gun violence in their statements. Shane is not violent because he wears an NRA t-shirt. Their statements reflect the hysteria and over-reactions of education systems across the nation.
The bullying and harassment begin
TEANewYork spokesman, Rus Thompson, told Misguided Children:
“He took off the sweatshirt, but, under that was the T shirt. Everyone looked at the T-shirt and said it was acceptable. Later on he was approached by the Vice Principal and told to tape it, he couldn’t understand because they said it was OK. He was then placed on suspension and sure they will come back with insubordination because that is all they have. The next day they searched him. WHY? He had a pocket tool kit with a phillips and flat head screwdriver with a pair of small pliers. The took it and put him on in house suspension. He was told he would get it back at the end of the day but they did not give it back to him.”
By calling Shane “insubordinate” and searching him, they are attempting to bully him into submission, and discredit what he loves to do- shoot and hunt. What do you think of the school’s actions, and their twisting of the facts? You can voice your opinion on the school website here.
