Obama Puts Commercial Trucks In His Crosshairs

Excerpted from E2 WirePresident Obama will unveil the next phase of fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards for heavy-duty vehicles on Tuesday.

During his visit to a Safeway distribution center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Obama will announce the new standards, which build upon the first standards the administration finalized for big rigs, semi trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles in 2011.

The new standards continue Obama’s promised “year of action,” a White House official said on Monday. In the last five days, including the new fuel economy standards, the administration has set a stricter tone on the president’s climate policies.

On Friday, Obama pitched a $1 billion climate change resiliency fund, aimed at helping communities better prepare and prevent future extreme weather. And on Sunday, Secretary of State John Kerry used harsher rhetoric to describe the changing climate and its impacts during his speech in Indonesia, calling it a weapon of mass destruction and announcing new efforts on the international front.

On Tuesday, the “president will direct the EPA and the Department of Transportation to develop and issue the next phase of medium and heavy-duty vehicle fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards by March 2016,” the official said.

Together, the actions signal a shift in tactics on climate change and renewed push to bring the issue front and center as an administration priority.

Republicans have already voiced their dissent with Obama’s climate fund pitch and have his larger climate agenda in their crosshairs. The new heavy-duty vehicle standards will likely receive a negative response.

Under the set timeline, the agencies should issue a proposal notice by March of next year. The new fuel efficiency standards will build upon and extend the rules for model year 2014 to 2018.

This second-phase rule making will cover model years into the next decade, the administration said. Keep reading

    1. Bulldog, you’d be suprised at whats happened in California in the last 10 years – it began with CARB (Cal. air resourses Board) making higher (nox) standards for the trucks, then the ports were closed to allow only trucks that were less than 5 years old (new port standards), etc., etc. until now – wherein, incoming (westbound trucks) freight rates change dramatically at the California border – and outbound (from the ports) rail shipments (from Long Beach and LA) have doubled (instead of trucks) – some just rail shipping east to a midwest terminal and then trucking it back west to its (not in California) destination – there’s more, but you get the gist.
Bottom line = I believe Californians are paying through the nose for this CARB crap – which, if history is any lesson, usually goes national

      1. I agree. Yall have it bad out there and they are trying to nationalize everything the communists in California are doing. I drove for a little while. The owner of the trucks would accept no loads going into California because none of his trucks could pass the carb laws.
I think the goal of all of this is to drive the independents out of business. Only walmart and a few other companies can afford to keep up with the new laws.
It sounds like there are more Patriots in California than most of initially thought.

        1. Indeed there are Bulldog. Many are incognito just waiting for the right moment . . . if you catch my drift. 😉

Also we have lots of military bases out here and not all military personnel are on board with the BO agenda. They’re also operating incognito.

The worm is set to turn.
          . . .
