Oregon Regulators Approve Plans to Make Beer Out of Sewage Water

Time – by Olivia B. Waxman

Not available in bars…yet

The Oregon Environmental Quality Commission recently approved the use of recycled sewage water to brew beer, the Oregon Public Broadcasting’s environmental news organization EarthFix reports.

Brewed via a purification process developed by Oregon’s Clean Water Services, the beer would not be available for commercial or retail use, and the finished product would still need to undergo tests to make sure it is safe to drink. And it won’t be on tap at any bars. It would only be served at tasting events hosted by its manufacturers, the home brewing club Oregon Brew Crew, and other water professional society functions.

In 2014, Oregon’s Clean Water services hosted a brewing competition to challenge beer enthusiasts to make beer out of “30 percent purified wastewater,” according to EarthFix. Overall, the point of developing this beer is to encourage innovative uses of the wastewater and spark a nationwide conversation about conserving water in creative ways in the midst of news about severe water shortages along the West Coast, a spokesperson for Clean Water Services told the news outlet.

  1. Good thing I don’t drink, but even if I still did it wouldn’t be the cr@p that passes for beer in this country… it would be KILKENNY’S, if anything. Best brew I’ve ever had anywhere.

This sounds like a Commiefornia concoction. Oregonians should SCREAMING about this bullsh#t!!! 😡

    1. “A staff report to the commission noted that using recycled water ‘will become increasingly important in the region as demands on our water resources increase in the future. … Growth in the Northwest is projected to occur at a higher rate over the next several decades as impacts from global climate change are predicted to be more severe in other regions, boosting immigration to the Northwest.’ ”

  2. This is disgusting. It’s bad enough that half of the beer in America has GMO’s in it, but now it’s going to be made from sewage water in Oregon. Next thing you know, we’ll have Ratburgers like they did in the movie, “Demolition Man”. Actually, I’m sure we already do, but they just haven’t admitted it yet.

  3. The last time I had beer or ale from that region was Rainer ale back in 1994. It was fantastic, and this comes from a gal who is not fond of beer, I remember it being crisp and clean and refreshing. Just to imagine that now they want to make beer with sewerage makes me sick. What has happened to common sense? Oh wait… The almighty zollar!

  4. Whats the difference?
Its already made with water containing fluoride and antibiotics/pharmaceuticals and radiation/barium/aluminum.
Besides $9.27(+deposit) a 6 pack? who the hell can even afford beer?

  5. I live in Portland. Just moved here recently…My son owns a recording studio here, so I have been here many times in the past before deciding to move here. This place is “microbrew” city…The people here pride themselves in
their local breweries. You walk into a brewpub, and you get high quality beer
and food. Free range beef, organic foods, and a PRICE too match. This is not a high income city, but yet the people here support their brewpubs. The makers of this sump water are more than welcome to DRINK it up…

    1. Moved from L.A. to Sweet Home, OR. in Feb. Population somewhere between 7 – 8,000. No more big cities for me.

Guaranteed 100% death traps once the SHTF.
