Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that she may file a legal challenge against President Trump if he declares a national emergency in order to build a southern border wall. She added that if he does this, a Democratic president could declare a national emergency to address gun violence in America.
During a press conference on Thursday, a reporter asked Pelosi about the president’s claim that he will declare a national emergency after he signs the spending bill and whether she intends to follow through on her claims to take legal action against Trump in that case.
“Did I ever say I was filling a legal challenge?” Pelosi asked.
Pelosi and the reporter had a back and forth about what she had said in the past.
“I may. That’s an option, and we’ll review our options,” Pelosi said. “It’s important to note when the president declares this emergency, first of all, it’s not an emergency. What’s happening at the border, it’s a humanitarian challenge to us.”
Pelosi then hinted that if Trump declares a national emergency to build his wall, then a Democratic president could declare a national emergency to address gun violence in America.
“Democratic presidents can declare emergencies as well,” Pelosi added.
