Police officer indicted for manslaughter of bicyclist who was run over

DALLAS (AP) – A fired Dallas police officer has been indicted on a manslaughter count in the 2013 death of a bicyclist who was run over by a patrol car while being chased.

Bryan Burgess was indicted Thursday in the death of Fred Bradford Jr.

Burgess initially was charged with criminally negligence homicide.

Burgess and another officer said they saw Bradford reach into a car and then tried to ride away. Burgess has said Bradford was struck when the bicycle turned in front of the squad car.

Chief David Brown fired Burgess and the other officer after an internal investigation found they waited several minutes to call for help and lied about what happened.

An attorney for Burgess previously denied the allegations. Messages left for the attorney Friday weren’t immediately returned.
