Beat police officers have been warned not to wear their uniforms on the way to work, due to fears they may be targeted by jihadi terrorists.

MI5 chiefs have warned that ‘home grown’ terror groups are planning another attack similar to the slaughter of drummer Lee Rigby.

Police officers have been told not to wear uniform while travelling to and from work – and to be extra careful revealing information on social media.

MI5 also believes that terrorists are scanning personal profiles on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to pick out suitable victims.

Officers have already been warned not to share personal information – and in particular not to use GPS ‘tagging’ functions which might alert a terrorist to their physical location.

Police chiefs have raised the threat level faced by officers from ‘moderate’ to ‘substantial’ – which means officers are instructed not to draw attention to themselves while outside work.

Officers have to travel to work in ‘half and halfs’ – regulation trousers, with a casual top.

The new alert is based on information received by intelligence agency GCHQ which suggests a group are planning an attack on a British police officer.
