I love your “remember when stuff.” Worked at a 76 station and performed all the fill-up, tires, and oil check….Working at a gas station was the best job I ever had…it was fun. I was even there when the “even/odd” license plate thing was going on…..still had fun.
Yes, David, I remember those “even-odd” plate
days. I had to get up and out of the house by
6:00 A. M. in order to get a decent spot in the
line at our local station.
Seems to be it was in the early to mid 70’s, and I
will never forget one morning while driving to the
station in the dark, an alligator (I live in Florida)
crossed the street in front of me, and his body
reached from one side of the two-lane street to
the other.
Here in the Orlando area we still have one local
neighborhood station that still washes your
windshields, checks the oil, etc. Unfortunately,
they have to charge more for the gas than I
can afford on Social Security!!!
Yeah, believer, it was the late 70’s……on wilshire blvd next to the L.A. country club. The line was so long that a couple of guys started selling donuts and coffee to the people in line….awesome.
And ya remember that the station attendant would take your money from you and you would not even have to get out of your car. Yep, some memories in the article Paul. 🙂 😎
yeah, these pictures do bring back fond memories, but a few of them were very surprising. 1. Self-service when gas was 5 cents per gallon. 2. A woman pumping her own gas into an early 50’s car (maybe why the picture was taken). 3. A gas station in Manhattan, where selling gas can’t pay the rent. (don’t run dry in fun city today)
Thank you, Paul! What a treat for the eyes and the soul.
“Those were the days, my friend.”
yes they were 1611. fond memories. makes my heart long for that kind of atmosphere now. aaaaaah.
Notice the 25.9 cents per gallon. Filler up Philco. Check the oil, tires and wash the windshield was normal service. Oh how I miss those days.
