Spam ‘missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 jet spotted near Bermuda Triangle’ video spreads on Facebook

Facebook users duped by missing Malaysia Airlines spamMetro

Spam videos enticing people to click on fake news stories about the missing Malaysia Airlines jet have been spreading malware on Facebook.

The fake ‘breaking news’ clips, which falsely claim the missing plane has been found, have been cluttering users’ timelines the week.

One bogus video has the headline: ‘Malaysia Plane MH370 Has Been Spotted Somewhere Near Bermuda Triangle. Shocking Videos Release Today.’

Other videos claim the footage has just been released by the BBC and CNN and that ’50 people have been saved’.

A member of the Indonesian Air Force at Medan city military base inspects the Indonesian military search operation for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 on March 12, 2014 in the area of Malacca Strait, a sea passageway between Indonesia (seen left of the map) and Malaysia (seen top left of the map). Malaysia faced a storm of criticism on March 12 over contradictions and information gaps in the hunt for a missing airliner with 239 people on board, as the search zone dramatically veered far from the intended flight path. When users click on the fake video they are encouraged to share the clip and like a page before they start watching, according to thehackernews.com.

The website says hackers are taking advantage of the huge interest in the story to spread malware on the social network and direct users’ to malicious websites.

‘If you’ve shared or liked it, it’s probably best to delete malware post from your Facebook wall,’ the website recommends.

The Beijing-bound aircraft last communicated with air traffic base stations east of Malaysia over the South China Sea.
