ABC News star Diane Sawyer will be stepping down from her role as anchor on ” ABC World News” this September. She will be replaced by “20/20” co-anchor, former WTVH-5 anchor and Syracuse-area native David Muir.

Muir anchors the “World News” weekend edition, and will be stepping into a role Sawyer has filled for five years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sawyer, 68, will now lead her own unit which will continue to produce news specials.

Meanwhile, George Stephanopoulos will become chief anchor at ABC News. He will continue to co-anchor “Good Morning America” and the Sunday program “This Week.” Stephanopoulos will also become the primary anchor for breaking news and election coverage.

The changes at ABC were announced in a press release on Wednesday morning.

“We have an extraordinary team of anchors who are gifted storytellers and uniquely skilled broadcasters,” said ABC News president James Goldston. “For years to come, they will inspire us all to do our best work and set a high bar for excellence to inform, empower and inspire our viewers.”

Sawyer extended her congratulations to Stephanopoulos and Muir, and addressed the direction she was moving in the ABC press release:

“After wonderful years at ‘World News’ I decided it is time to move to a new full time role at ABC News. I’ll be joined by an incredible team of journalists dedicated to enterprise reporting, innovative approaches to breaking news and new ways of thinking about big issues and events around the world”

David Muir will officially take over as Anchor and Managing Editor of “World News” on September 2, 2014.

Muir is a Central New York native and a graduate of Onondaga Central High School and Ithaca College.

He got his start in news in Syracuse as an anchor at WTVH-5 from 1995-2000.

He has been on the rise at ABC News, where he has reported from around the world and appeared on air more times than any other network correspondent.

Muir’s Emmy-nominated “Made in America” series features reports on U.S. companies that create jobs in America.

“David has made his reputation reporting from the ground on every big story of recent times, and we know that when big stories happen, wherever they happen, David will be there for us and for our audience,” said Goldston. “I am thrilled he is taking the helm at World News.”

“On this incredibly humbling day, I think of the 12-year-old boy with a dream of being a reporter and seeing the world. I never could have imagined seeing that world with Diane Sawyer,” said Muir in the press release. “I cannot wait to begin this new adventure with Diane and with George, whose political brain power and endless curiosity inspire me, and drive us all to be better every day.”

Muir will continue to co-anchor “20/20” with Elizabeth Vargas, but will no longer anchor the weekend edition. The program ended the 2013-14 season at its highest ratings in five years.

“World News” has also seen favorable ratings lately, with the program winning the May sweeps ratings period for the first time in more than six years, according to THR.

    1. It isn’t news and they are not journalists and never will be. They are propaganda specialists that are witty, clever and entertaining period. Journalism went the way of the black and white TV. It is the most scripted TV program up there with the rest.

  1. “We have an extraordinary team of anchors who are gifted storytellers’ said ABC News president James Goldston. Once upon a time, on the shores of Babylon, 19 middle easterners, armed with boxcutters, caused 3 tall buildings to implode on themselves, at near free fall speed and we all lived happily ever after
