‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ tops slow weekend at the box office

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” claimed the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $21.6 million.

The penultimate chapter in the massively successful franchise has now earned $257.7 million domestically. “Mockingjay – Part 1” is still about $78 million shy of where the previous installment, “Catching Fire,” was in its third weekend just last year.

Post-Thanksgiving is generally one of the year’s slowest box office weekends, with no new, wide releases.

In the specialty box office world, awards hopeful “Wild,” starring Reese Witherspoon, opened in 21 theatres Wednesday, earning an estimated $630,000 over the three-day.

The R-rated horror pic “The Pyramid” debuted in 589 theatres to a less impressive $1.35 million.

  1. Wasn’t impressed.

Not enough action. They shouldn’t have split the last book into 2 movies. Buncha cr@p.

    1. Hey #1, everyone at my theater including the customers were bitching that this was a horrible movie, as there was not enough action and just when things were about to kick off, the movie was to be continued.

Everyone says it was nothing more than a money making stunt to drag it out like Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings.

Supposedly, it followed the book exactly and that the first part of the book dragged and had no action, while the second half (which is all in the PART II movie), is where the action is.

Funny thing is that the last book was way shorter than the last two books, which is further proof that they dragged it out for the money.

Hollywood is so bankrupt and in financial trouble that they have to pull stunts like this to grab more money from people that they don’t have. It’s disgusting.

      1. “… a money making stunt to drag it out like Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings.”

Not “Lord of the Rings”, NC. That was 3 books, 3 movies. You must be thinking of “The Hobbit”. One book, 3 movies.
