US Department of Justice attends Hearne Town Hall Meeting

KBTX – by Patrina Adger

Hearne, TX The shooting death of a 93 year old woman in Hearne more than two weeks ago is still getting a lot of attention, including from the Federal Government.

The Hearne Citizen’s Oversight Committee hosted a second town hall meeting and invited a member of the U.S. Department of Justice to sit in on the discussion.

Kim Milstead listened to the community’s concerns and gathered information to present to the Hearne police chief. She says her role is not to prosecute, investigate, or enforce any laws, but to act as a mediator between the community and city officials. “There’s a healing process that has to take place. We’ve got to put together a program that we can put in the community to begin the healing.”

Milstead said the justice department offers police training, law enforcement mediation skills, and diversity training to address issues like this.

Officer Stephen Stem shot Pearlie Golden on May 6th after her nephew says she fired two shots into the ground and refused to drop her weapon. But Stem told his attorney that Golden never fired any shots. Four days later, the city council voted unanimously to fire Stem.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting and will turn over their evidence to a Grand Jury to determine if Stem’s actions were justified and if charges will be filed.
