US private troops fighting alongside Ukrainian army against pro-Russians

Hundreds of American privates soldiers from a security company with a record of alleged atrocities in Iraq are fighting along with the Ukrainian army against the pro-Russian activists in southeast of Ukraine, according to media reports.

Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper, citing country’s federal intelligence agency BND, reported on Sunday that 400 heavily-armed troops working for Academi security company, formerly known as Blackwater, are deployed in Ukraine.

The report said that BND informed the German government on April 29 that the American company is aiding the new Western-backed government in Kiev in its military operation against pro-Russian protesters.

According to BND assessment, the paper said, American intelligence services are aware of the secret involvement of the notorious company.

The German federal intelligence agency has refused to comment on the report.

The Virginia-based company dismissed similar media reports back in March, saying that such “rumors” were posted by “some irresponsible bloggers and online reporters.”

“Such unfounded statements combined with the lack of factual reporting to support them and the lack of context about the company, are nothing more than sensationalistic efforts to create hysteria and headlines in times of genuine crisis,” Academi Corporation said on its website.

The US private company gained its notoriety in Iraq for its killing of unarmed civilians in several operations and its arms smuggling after the US-led invasion of the country in 2003.

The company has been forced to change its name twice from Balckwater to Xe Services in 2009 and then to current name Academi in 2011.
