January 28, 2014 – INDONESIA – This stunning time lapse footage shows the eruption of Mount Sinabung on Sumatra Island, northwest Indonesia in recent weeks. While the images may look impressive, the active volcano has cause havoc in the region with over 25,000 people evacuated from the danger area since the active flows began last September and authorities raised the alert status to the highest level in November. The volcano, which became active in 2010 having lain dormant since the 15th century, has erupted hundreds of times since the latest activity began, sending volcanic debris as high as 4,000m into the air. This video shows the devastation wrought on a nearby village by the tons of ash descending from the air. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. –Gizmodo
