‘We’re Not Going To Tolerate It’: Colorado Sheriffs Unite to Block ‘Unenforceable’ Gun Control Laws

In the wake of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado passed some of the strictest gun control measures in the country.

But in recent months, an overwhelming 55 of the state’s 62 county sheriffs have joined a lawsuit aiming to block the measures.

“These bills do absolutely nothing to make Colorado a safer place to live, to work, to play or to raise a family,” Weld County Sheriff John Cooke explained at a recent press conference. “Instead these misguided, unconstitutional bills will have the opposite effect because they greatly restrict the right of decent, law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, their families and their homes.

Sheriff Terry Maketa of El Paso County is one of the opposing sheriffs, and he explained on TheBlaze TV Wednesday how the public was “duped” into supporting overly vague legislation banning high-capacity magazines and requiring background checks.

Maketa says they believe the laws are unenforceable, but also violate the Second and Fourteenth Amendments.

After explaining the tactics used to pass the bills that essentially “eliminated all public input,” Maketa reiterated that it’s clearly an “overreaching step” for politicians to claim law enforcement supports stricter gun control.

When asked by Pat Gray whether he and other sheriffs are “getting flak” for standing against the stricter measures, Maketa replied that it’s the “exact opposite.”

“I would say the communications I’ve received are 99% in favor,” he added.

“I think Colorado is the epicenter of this battle, and 55 Colorado sheriffs have drawn a line in the sand and said ‘We’re not going to tolerate it,’ he concluded. “[The laws] are unenforceable…and we certainly are not going to compromise citizens’ rights [to claim] that we are.”

  1. 55 out of 62 sheriffs are not going to enforce the gun control laws. That means only 7 stupid sheriffs are on the elites payroll in Colorado. Sucks to be the elite right now. My hats off to the patriotic sheriffs who follow the Constitution. The other 7 can go deport themselves right now and brand themselves as traitors to the Republic.

  2. This entire article makes ZERO sense. NADA, ZIP, ZILCH. BULLSH*T.

The sheriff need only tell his deputies not to arrest anybody for bullsh*t law such and such. And that’s the end of it. For example, lets say the Sheriff didn’t want to enforce the seat belt law. He would tell his deputies, the seat belt law is unconstitutional, DO NOT WRITE TICKETS FOR IT! And that would be the end of it for that particular county. There is no need for a suit whatsoever. Make no mistake, cops never give each other tickets for anything. Its called professional courtesy. There is no reason why cops can’t honor their oaths and skip bullsh*t that is unconstitutional.

  3. The CO Senate Democrats supposedly threatened the salaries of these sheriffs if they didn’t play along. Bordering on extortion. No doubt these same Senators would be watching to make sure that these laws were upheld.

    1. I have no doubt that $$$ and threats are involved. However, rather than the false Democrat/Republican paradigm, I see an infection of the Bloomie Plague.

  4. I can tell you what the next step will be. The DHS will “bribe” these sheriffs into compliance. Janet Napalitano and Joe Lieberman will give away armored vehicles, ammo and weapons to these sheriffs. Once they accept them they will be under the thumb of Homeland Security. Joe Lieberman’s wet dream is to have 200,000 brown coats in arms called DHS force and full co-operation of all police and law enforcement from around the country.

  5. Perhaps these Sheriffs recall how the Columbine investigation was railroaded and shutdown. Even info posted to the internet was and is rabidly ‘cleansed’ as soon as found. 55 Colorado Sheriffs are no friends of the money changers.
