Woman, 43, is shot dead by a hunter who mistook her for a deer

A New York woman was shot dead after a hunter said he mistakenly took her for a deer, according to police.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says 43-year-old Rosemary Billquist, of Sherman, had taken her two Labradors for a walk in her hometown near the Pennsylvania border around 5.30pm on Wednesday.

The hunter, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Jadlowski, told deputies he thought he saw a deer in the field and fired his single-shot pistol.

After hearing Billquist’s scream, he found her about 200 yards away, called 911 and applied pressure to her wound until EMS arrived.

Billquist was taken to UPMC Hamot hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she was pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s officials said Jadlowski has been cooperating with investigation and not charges have been filed as of yet.

The investigation showed that Jadlowski reported the shooting at 5.24pm, 40 minutes after sunset. It is illegal to hunt after sunset per New York State law.

Jamie Billquist, who met his wife in 1990, said she was was a loving and selfless woman.

‘She was always out to help somebody. She never wanted credit and was always quiet about it,’ he told The Buffalo News. ‘She’s just an angel. An angel for sure.’

Billquist was a volunteer at Chautauqua Hospice and at UPMC Chautauqua WCA Hospital, where she worked performing medical transcription.

‘She could have done so much more,’ he said. ‘Her life was cut way too short.’

Friends and co-workers on Thursday night held a vigil, decorating a bench she donated to the hospital with electric tea lights, a yellow Lab stuffed animal and flowers.

‘They sang and prayed,’ her husband said. ‘It was amazing. It was a community thing. I was blessed to be able to share it.’

  1. “… told deputies he thought he saw a deer in the field and fired his single-shot pistol.”

Who the hell hunts deer with a PISTOL???

“… Jadlowski reported the shooting at 5.24pm, 40 minutes after sunset. It is illegal to hunt after sunset per New York State law.”

    AND in the dark?????

Did they check his blood alcohol level?

      1. Exactly what I was thinking, mary. The ‘blood alcohol level’ was me being facetious again.

If he HAD been drunk, there’s no way he could have nailed her with a single shot.

Unless he was 4 feet away, or less.

  2. this is actually more common than people think.. you got people who go out with a 6pak of beer, get lit, then shoot at anything that moves.. people do not look like deer and deer do not look like people, so how the hell you mistake a person for a deer is beyond me. if your not sure as to what it is then do not shoot.. that goes for the morons who see a bush moving and fire at a small patch visible through the leaves not really sure what they are shooting at.. i was at a local gun shop a few years back when a guy brought in a rifle that he had bought there. nothing wrong with the rifle but a lot wrong with the idiot owner. he was bitching that he was trying to shoot a deer and it jammed on the 5th shot. after the first shot the critter was most likely running for its life so this idiot was shooting blindly at a deer running flat out through the woods with bullets going nobody knows where. but this is why i do not hunt during hunting season as the woods fill up with trigger happy drunk assholes who will shoot at anything that moves. like put the dam beer down and pay attention to what the hell your doing.. if im with a person hunting and they open a beer then im leaving their ass in the woods.

  3. THIS IS WITHOUT EXCUSE.
THAT ASSHOLE SHOULD BE TRIED AND HANGED..
I HUNTED ALL MY LIFE WITH EVERYTHING FROM A RECURVE BOW UP TO A CAP AND BALL REVOLVER. I HAVE NEVER FIRED “BLINDLY”……. AS I SAID..
THERE IS NO EXCUSE…… IT WAS A MURDER, JUST TO WATCH SOMEONE DIE….

    1. maybe he WAS 100% sure what he was firing at, he hit his target , right?

maybe its his excuse that sucks , not his aim ?
