ABC cancels “Roseanne” after Barr’s racist tweet

CBS News

Stellar ratings and an apology weren’t enough to mitigate Roseanne Barr’s racist comments, and now ABC is pulling the plug on “Roseanne.” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey says the network has decided to cancel the “Roseanne” reboot.

Dungey said in a statement to CBS News, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.” In 2016, Dungey made headlines when she became the first African-American to run the entertainment division of a major broadcast television network.

Earlier on Tuesday, Barr apologized for a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former senior advisor to President Barack Obama. Barr compared Jarrett, who is black, to an ape in a tweet. After initially pushing back against criticism of the comment, Barr admitted her “joke” was in “bad taste” and said she was leaving Twitter.

Barr’s tweet about Jarrett said, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Barr later deleted it and said she was sorry.

“I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.” But the apology was clearly not enough for ABC.

Earlier, Barr had rebuffed accusations of racism by insisting that “Islam is not a race.” But her eventual admission that the joke was about Jarrett’s “looks” seemed to confirm that the ape comment was indeed about Jarrett’s appearance.

The offending tweet came late Monday night, amidst a series of tweets referring to George Soros as a Nazi and Chelsea Clinton as a Soros family member (Barr apologized and took it back, then attacked the family of Clinton’s husband, Marc Mezvinsky, instead).

Barr is a vocal Trump supporter, as is her character on the “Roseanne” revival on ABC. President Trump called Barr to congratulate her after the first episode of the reboot scored record ratings.

The comedian Wanda Sykes, a consulting producer on the show, tweeted that she will not be returning in the wake of Barr’s comments.

  1. Sigh…..how is she wrong about any of this? All higher primates should be passed off that they have something common with Jarrett or Barry…any Nazi world be angry at being compared with Soros…the Clinton’s are scum…I just don’t see how Barr is in the wrong here.
On a positive note, Sykes et al. Are leaving.

  2. “But her eventual admission that the joke was about Jarrett’s “looks” seemed to confirm that the ape comment was indeed about Jarrett’s appearance.”

Since when is calling a spade a spade racism???

If the guy looks like an ape… it’s only an affront to the ape community.

      1. LOL… didn’t read the tweet, was going on the last name alone.

Female ape, then… no difference. 🙂

An insult to all apes, though, if you ask me.

          1. As far as I know she is, Angel. The celebs stopped confiding in me when I opened my big mouth about Travolta being bi and Yoko having a fling with Hillary. Now only high-powered CEO’s confide in me, and of course lower level Secret Service guys, and George Soros’s eldest son.

Ha!! Couldn’t resist kiddin’ ya. Yeah, she’s here on her nut farm. Sends out little scouts now and then sellin’ socialism. Is perpetually running for president. I think Travolta likes her but is just using her to get to Goodman.

            🙂

Oh boy. Too much coffee. Better quit while I’m ahead. Yeah, I’ll blame it on coffee.

  7. Stupid liberal news. I don’t watch tv other than old movies, but i love and have always loved her honesty. Like or not she is always right in my opinion, i just differ on her supporting gays but her politics and humor SPOT ON. I think she will come out on top she probly wasn’t looking for a job when she got that one and doesn’t need it for sure.

  8. This shows exactly what ABC is all about
    Why?
Because the “View” is still on
And it is just as racist as any one of Barr’s comments

ABC should dry up and blow away

Oh and Wanda Sykes is offended by something Roseanne Barr said ? OMG that’s a load lol

I see a gold mine of marketing value here.

    P.S….
The Koreans have taken over orange county in Fullerton CA.

    Shhhhh….don’t tell anyone.
    It’s a secret….

  10. A correction is necessary;
Where the article reads: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”, it should properly read: “Roseanne is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her.”

My opinion of her has always been one of utter disrespect and revulsion. Her making fun of some Jewish Mafia types just doesn’t alter what side of the bedpan she belongs in.

  11. Roseanne in my opinion is on drugs ! Too much money and probably too much time spent with AMA reps . She’s a loose cannon .

  12. Yeah, she’s an anomaly, a Jewish kook in shades of pink, frequently crass, yet a very curious mix of a person. I must point out that she has shined quite a bit of light on PizzaGate, David Hogg, CIA Mind-Control, etc.

For me, this whole thing is a free speech issue. Censorship is putting on its velvet cape and jeweled crown attempting to once-and-for-all silence the world by issuing its great dictate:  SHUT UP!!  It’s happening everywhere from entertainment to academia, to… This is the moment of epic muzzling.

So on the current issue, I stand with Roseanne and hope her case which blatantly bucks the sacrosanct can somehow bring the silencers and the snowflakes to their knees. She did back-peddle a little, but it can’t be easy to take on Satan.

Now I’m thinking of that famous quote that goes something like:

“I may hate what you have to say but will protect forever your right to say it.”

To that I’ll add that if we don’t like what someone is saying all we have to do is either ignore it or counter it with our own opinions.

    Roseanne’s case: one to watch.
