The Internal Revenue Service and other U.S. agencies awarded about $415,000 in contracts to a license plate-tracking company before Homeland Security leaders dropped a plan for similar work amid privacy complaints.
Federal offices such as the Forest Service and the U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command chose Livermore, California-based Vigilant Solutions to provide access to license plate databases or tools used to collect plate information, according to government procurement records compiled by Bloomberg. SANFORD — The federal government is trying to revoke the license of a gun store owner who refused to allow a federal agent to copy gun records during a compliance inspection last year.
Phil Chabot, who owns Pac N Arms on Emery Street in Sanford, was issued a notice of revocation in February by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The bureau got a warrant to search Chabot’s store in February, and court records indicate he is suspected of making “straw sales” – sales through an intermediary – to a convicted felon who was barred from buying or possessing guns. MIAMI — Miami-Dade police have arrested five men who were spotted in a car changing into phony police clothing and gear.

9/11 conspiracy theorist and investigative journalist Michael Ruppert has reportedly committed suicide.
The 63-year-old former narcotics investigator with the LAPD shot himself after his radio show, according to an announcement by author Carolyn Baker who was a guest on his final broadcast on Sunday.

CALGARY – Calgary police say the son of one of their own is a suspect in the worst mass murder in the city’s history, a bloody and baffling attack on a group of university students at a house party.
Five young people were celebrating the last day of classes at the University of Calgary when they were stabbed to death early Tuesday. The man who allegedly killed three people when he opened fire outside a Jewish community center and nearby retirement community in a Kansas City suburb Sunday is reportedly a 73-year-old Missouri man with a history of racist and anti-Semitic activity.

One month before the Boston Marathon was attacked with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the Massachusetts State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) hosted a Pre-Boston Marathon Tabletop Exercise. One of the exercise scenarios happened to be an IED explosion during the Marathon.
This Lessons Learned document from FEMA details several exercises that were viewed as helping to prepare for the attacks that took place during the Boston Marathon. The hunt is on today for a black bear who mauled a woman at her home in an upscale central Florida neighborhood, leaving her with injuries to her face, legs and torso and requiring her to get 40 stitches to the head.

Technology is a double-edged sword. It has enabled the government to become more intrusive than ever with its online spying capabilities. However, cheap and discreet recording devices make it much more feasible to hold cops on the street accountable.
Police State USA encourages holding government officials accountable but advises everyone to research the laws in their own states regarding secretly recording audio conversations (Read more: The Reporter’s Recording Guide). Encounters with police officers in public generally do not fall under such restrictions, particularly after the recent court decision in Illinois.
