People lined up in droves Sunday (August 11) in Caracas’ Bolivar Plaza to sign petitions that will be sent to the UN Secretary General in a show of opposition to US sanctions.

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has urged the president to cut short Congress’ August recess in order to help the legislature pass urgent gun-control legislation.
“Today, as Speaker of the House, I am writing in good faith to request that you call the United States Senate back into session immediately … to consider House-passed bipartisan gun violence prevention legislation,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump on Thursday following last week’s mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which left at least 31 people dead and many more wounded. The FBI has published a document that concludes that “conspiracy theories” can motivate believers to commit crimes.
Considering the growing acceptance of pre-emptive arrest, that is, arresting someone before they can commit a crime that they are suspected of planning to commit, challenging official explanations, such as those offered for the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King or the official explanation for 9/11, can now result in monitoring by authorities with a view to finding a reason for pre-emptive arrest. Presidents George W. Bush and Obama created the police state precedents of suspension of habeas corpus and assassination of citizens on suspicion alone without due process. If Americans can be preemptively detained indefinitely and preemptively assassinated, Americans can expect to be preemptively imprisoned for crimes that they did not commit. PALESTINIAN prisoners held in Israeli jails are being used as guinea pigs for medical experiments without their knowledge in a “war against humanity,” a leading Israeli politician warned today.

Marking the anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Japan’s Hiroshima, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the United States’ legacy of targeting civilians lives on 74 years after it became the only country to ever drop a nuclear bomb.

Switzerland hasn’t had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself.
The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 attempted homicides with firearms. The country’s overall murder rate is near zero. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) announced that he would “limit” his work in August after having surgery to remove a part of his lung damaged in the 2017 assault on him by his neighbor.
In a tweet published on Monday morning, Paul revealed that he had lung surgery over the weekend to remove a part that was damaged when he was assaulted by his neighbor — Rene Boucher — two years ago. On Saturday, a white supremacist killed 20 people and injured dozens of others at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. On Sunday, nine people were shot and killed in downtown Dayton, Ohio, with 27 others injured. Walmart has an interesting role in this: While company founder Sam Walton was an avid hunter, most people associate the big box store with groceries, cleaning supplies, and clothing. In many locations, perhaps surprising to some, you can buy guns and ammunition. And while it depends on the state, Walmart does allow you to open carry in stores where it’s legal to do so. In international peacekeeping operations of the present, private military companies occupy an equal position with regular armies.
