Anyone who is a regular reader knows that if there is a scary pandemic out there we should be worried about, I’m the head engineer on the worry train. (This book is front and center on my bookcase. Obviously, I spend a fair bit of time thinking about pandemics!)

There are many viruses that would wreak terrifying havoc if it were to spread, and since the beginning of this, I haven’t been convinced that Zika is one of them.  The “cure” as officials race to “stop Zika” – that, I’m worried about. Predictions are that soon 1 in 4 Puerto Ricans will contract the virus. But is it really that big of a deal? As the waters in Louisiana continue to rise, over a thousand motorists stranded by the flood have been stuck on Interstate 12 for more than 24 hours. Southeast Louisiana has been hard-hit before with flooding, and a decade after Hurricane Katrina, people are still trying to rebuild.

Some families were trying to evacuate, as flood waters crept closer to their homes, while others were going about their day-to-day business. You’ve really got to be careful when you travel to third world countries. They have these banana republics where they can steal from you, beat you, and lie to you. You might go to jail but the authorities there can literally get away with murder, theft, and deceit.  And heaven forbid that you end up in jail there because they are hellholes in which you will likely be beaten, raped, and forced to perform slave labor.

I was trying to summon up a rush of pride to write about what makes our country great, and all I could think about was how far we’ve sunk. The day after the most deadly gun-related massacre in America, I took my 15-year-old daughter out to shoot guns.

I’m a firm believer in refusing to be a victim, and this philosophy carries over to the way I’ve raised my children. We had planned to take a course together from a new instructor for a while. My daughter, 15, hadn’t ever shot a gun before our class.
